This post wonderfully illustrates what we do at the Centre for Literacy compared to tutors or tutoring agencies. Our major focus is to provide remediation. It is to identify and then remediate/support a student to overcome their difficulties in reading, writing, math and comprehension. Our clients are typically those with diagnosed or suspected learning disabilities/disorders.

Many parents are surprised to learn about the 30% rule. Kids with neurodevelopmental issues like ADHD often present as about 30% younger than their chronological age. The following great graphic was put together by GraceUnderPressure.blog. The implications are astounding. A 15 year old student entering high school may exhibit the maturity level of a 10 year old. This is why accommodations and supports are so vitally important.

Parents of children recently diagnosed with learning disabilities/disorders sometimes realize that the struggles they may have experienced in school were caused by LDs. It is never too late to seek out a diagnosis and support for LD.

Failure to believe in themselves can pose a greater barrier than the learning disability which may initially cause a child to feel like they are poor learner.

Parents, trust your instinct. You know your child best.
