About German-Canadian Centre For Innovation And Research

The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) is an initiative for the development of European-Canadian research and business relations.

German-Canadian Centre For Innovation And Research Description

The German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) is a multilateral initiative for the development of German–Canadian, and more recently, French-Canadian research and business relations. Based in Edmonton, Alberta and located in the TEC Edmonton Business Accelerator, the GCCIR provides support for the exchange of information, development of networks, and the establishment and cultivation of collaborative partnerships in academia, business, and industry. In addition to multiple academic partnerships, the GCCIR works with the Albertan Ministry of Economic Development and Trade to operate the Alberta-Germany Collaboration Fund and the Alberta-Canada-France Collaboration Fund, both aimed at facilitating and supporting joint, innovative technology development projects between Albertan and European SMEs.

Funding & Partnerships

With its Alberta-Germany Collaboration Fund for Product Development and Commercialization, the GCCIR offers a unique opportunity for Albertan small and medium sized enterprises (SME) to receive funding and assistance in building alliances with industry players in Germany. The goal is to help participants become more globally competitive and to foster increased international trade, revolutionary product development, commercialization and economic growth.

This is a really interesting documentary by the CBC about why many Germans are so fascinated by North American indigenous culture. Definitely worth watching!

Also the second week of our Matchmaking Mission to Europe was a success. It was the first time we had partnered with IraSME for a larger partnering event in Aachen. The benefits were unmistakably the large pool of participating companies also from other European countries, such as Belgium, Austria, Croatia and Greece, that our companies from Alberta could draw from. We thank our matchmaking partners Zenit GmbH and Cambridge Network for their great work in helping put together two promising symposia in the cities of Aachen and Cambridge. Below a few impressions of the Aachen symposium and after-symposium visit of the Aachen Christmas market, as well as the Cambridge symposium.

We at the GCCIR hope that all of you have a great Vorweihnachtszeit (pre-Christmas period). If you want to make the most of this very special time you might want to try some of these German Christmas traditions.

The first week of our Matchmaking Mission to Europe is complete, and it has been a great success so far. We thank our matchmaking partners innoget, CzechInvest, the Czech Ministry of Industry and Trade, and TUMTech for their great work in helping put together three promising symposia in the cities of Barcelona, Prague and Munich. Below a few impressions of the symposia in Barcelona and Prague, and the research visit to Eurecat.

GCCIR had the pleasure of attending the Smart City Expo in Barcelona today. We made some exciting new contacts, and are looking forward to our first of five matchmaking symposia this coming Monday.

It was no doubt a well-rounded conference and we, the GCCIR, could not have hoped for livelier discussions or a better audience and speakers.

Last week the GCCIR attended one of the biggest shows around technologies in the oil and gas sector, the Global Petroleum Show, in Calgary. Also attending were Orcan Energy AG from Germany and Atlantis Research Labs from Alberta. The two SMEs have recently entered into an innovative R&D collaboration. To learn about this new collaboration project and highlight the impact that the government's R&D funding programs have, Hon. Deron Bilous, Minister of Economic Development and T...rade (EDT), stopped by the Orcan Energy AG and Atlantis Research Labs' booths at the Global Petroleum Show last week. The collaboration project Orcan Energy AG and Atlantis Research Labs have entered into is funded through the Alberta-Europe Technology Collaboration Fund, a program created by EDT and administered by the German-Canadian Centre for Innovation and Research (GCCIR) to support Albertan companies, foster economic growth in Alberta, and encourage international knowledge transfer between Alberta and Europe.
