On March 21st the City of Edmonton held a workshop for the Strathcona neighbourhood renewal. This was different from the information sessions that the city often runs, as it was a hands-on workshop with various members of the city departments. We looked at the infrastructure of the neighbourhood (sidewalks, roads, bike paths), parks, green spaces, playgrounds, as well as talked about what things we would like to see in the neighbourhood. With Spring Break less than a week away, you may be looking for a fun activity to keep the kids busy. How about building an entire printable neighbourhood? Vivint (the home security company), has a really neat blog that has tons of printable buildings, some cars, people, and other neighbourhood accessories. Just print these sheets out (such as the Edmonton Public Library - 50 cents/page for color), and then break out the scissors and glue sticks, and the kids should be busy for a few hours. Here's a link to the round-up of all their Printable Neighbourhood blog posts:

Eileen Rygus Principal King Edward Elementary School Every morning, in every classroom, you will find students at KEE pouring over books. Teaching students to read and enjoy books is a priority for every teacher at our school. You will find “Word Walls” in all classes, and all Language Arts instruction begins with a few minutes of “word work” involving those words. [ 74 more words ]

Eileen Rygus Principal King Edward Elementary School Cover Information: Some books have a reading level printed on the front or back cover. RL 2.4 would mean that this book could be read independently by most students at mid grade 2 level. 5 Finger Rule: Encourage your child to use the 5 finger rule to test whether a book is the right level for reading alone. The Strathcona neighbourhood will be undergoing Neighbourhood Renewal in 2019, 2020 and 2021 (they're breaking it up into 3 years, with each section taking roughly a year). Previously the city would come up and replace like-for-like; a sidewalk is replaced with an updated sidewalk, and a road is replaced with an updated road - they don't make many changes. Our neighbourhood will be a bit different, as residents in the area have been working with the city to improve the walkability, cycling infrastructure, and enhancements to make the area safer for all. Eileen Rygus Paired reading can help your child become a more fluent reader and can also help your child better understand and remember what (s)he is reading. It also demonstrates that reading is an important and fun activity for people of all ages. Find a quiet and comfortable spot. Let your child hold the book so that you can both see the words. CASINO – Thanks to all the volunteers! Thank you to everyone who took time off their busy schedule and volunteered for the Casino December 17 and 18. Some families even did two or more shifts! Your time and effort is really appreciated. Huge thanks to Holly M. who organized us, and our two fabulous casino advisors, Christy and Trish! The money raised, upwards of $70,000, will pay for books, technology (smart boards, chrome books, etc), the art enrichment program (artist in residence, music and drama workshops), field trips and much more. Contributed by Cheryl West-Hicks You know those places you can't wait to share. They seem too good to be true. "Is it possible that I could be the one to introduce someone to this gem?" you think, imagining your heroism. Creation space is one of those places. Alie is a phenomenal artist. Seriously, check her out here. Fiona took her community art classes last year and it was easily her favourite part of the week. [ 340 more words ]

A few weeks ago we asked how your children get to school, whether they walk, bike/scooter/skateboard, take a family vehicle or taxi, or take the bus. Of those that took the survey (which represents approx 25% of the students in the school), the results were clear - our students walk to school. Here's a breakdown: We'll be asking the same question in January or February to see how the results change during the winter.

This week was a bit of a big deal in our world. You see, yesterday marked the last day of Canadian Down Syndrome Awareness Week! Each year, from November 1st to 7th we help educate our friends and family about Down syndrome and celebrate the accomplishments and lives of individuals with Down syndrome. This year, Ella and I were privileged to be able to do a presentation for her class. [ 607 more words ]

Now that the Facebook page is set up properly, and will be updating whenever anything is added to the KEEPAC website, please feel free to invite other KEE parents to like the page so they can be updated on the happenings at the school.
Thanks, Gord
