Join artist, Heather Shillinglaw as she speaks about her work, 'Whiskey Scrip'.
This installation retells Shillinglaw’s family oral history of her great-great-grandfather John “Old Man Jack” Norris, who, according to family stories, contracted Indigenous and Métis women to transport whiskey on Red River Carts, disguised as homesteading supplies.
Learn about Shillinglaw’s artistic practice which has involved going back to the sacred Nēhiyaw teachings on the uses of plants to ...make connections to Mother Earth, which she sees as a way of healing oneself physically, mentally and spiritually, and a way of preserving culture.

Edmonton-based Métis artist Heather Shillinglaw’s installation retells her family’s oral history of her great-great-grandfather John “Old Man Jack” Norris, who, according to family stories, contracted Indigenous and Métis women to transport whiskey on Red River Carts, disguised as homesteading supplies. Shillinglaw’s beaded and quilted hide map of the Carlton Trail traces these journeys from Fort Garry to Fort Edmonton, entangled with the issuance of Métis scrip and the impac...ts of this smuggled alcohol.

> ABOUT THE ARTIST Heather Shillinglaw is an Edmonton-based Métis artist whose practice focuses on storytelling, nature and the traditional use of plants and flowers. Shillinglaw holds a BFA from the Alberta College of Art and Design in Calgary and her work has been shown across Alberta and internationally, including a recent solo show Buffalo Girl at the Art Gallery of Grande Prairie featuring three distinct bodies of work. Shillinglaw has described herself as an ‘environmental activist’ and explores her Métis heritage inspired by stories from her grandparents and her mother, using beading, collage and installation.

B.G-Osborne's 'A Thousand Cuts' is now open at the gallery. This exhibition, along with Patrick Higgins' 'On the Green Seesaw', are on until September 29.

In solidarity with the artist B.G-Osborne and The New Gallery, Latitude 53 is honoured to welcome 'A Thousand Cuts' to the gallery from September 26-29, 2018.
A reception for the work will be held on Saturday, September 29 at 7-10pm.
This follows Calgary's Arts Commons turning off the 3-channel video work being exhibited in The New Gallery's +15 Window, on September 14, 2018. The reasons cited being that the work contained “a lot of swearing and nudity” that had garnered “a...

In solidarity with the artist B.G-Osborne and The New Gallery, Latitude 53 is honoured to welcome 'A Thousand Cuts' to the gallery.
This follows Calgary's Arts Commons turning off the 3-channel video work being exhibited in The New Gallery's +15 Window. The reasons cited being that the work contained “a lot of swearing and nudity” that had garnered “a lot of complaints from concerned patrons.”

Congratulations to Emmanuel Osahor on receiving a honourable mention in the RBC Canadian Painting Competition.
The Edmonton-based visual artist has made vital contributions to the L53 community, as both a past board member and exhibiting artist.

Latitude 53’s Board of Directors are proud to announce, Michelle Schultz, as the Interim Executive Director for the Edmonton artist-run centre.
The interim period will begin on October 1, 2018 and run for one year.

A University of Alberta research project is exploring how young adults (aged 18-29) across the trans masculine spectrum and living in and around Edmonton use arts activity to cope with stress and build resilience.

The deadline for the Edmonton Artists' Trust Fund award is in one week, September 4.
The award recognizes an artist’s work and contribution to the community as well as providing financial stability to renew, develop, create or experiment, via Edmonton Arts Council.
