We were lucky to visit the Echo Project on Bonaire last year. Amazing work these folks are doing to provide habitat for these birds.

Bird Of the Week- Senegal Parrot . Senegal parrots are great companion animals and are one of my favorite species. Because of their size and intelligence they are one of the most heavily trapped and traded parrots. According to the World Parrot Trust, since 1981 close to 800,000 individuals were recorded for trade in the pet industy. How many were caught and sold illegaly? The wild population is thought to be stable, but for how long?

Bird of the Week - Black cowled Saltator this is a member of the Grossbeak family from Western South America.

Wonderful service, passion, and prices. Have lots of different selection and were very helpful even though we came at about five minutes to closing, we were never rushed nor warned about the time. Very helpful, and answer any questions necessary. They have a very nice photo wall as well which is nice to look at while you enjoy everything else they have to offer.

When you walk into meikas you're always greeted by a friendly face that is more than willing to help you with whatever you need! Janine and Ian go above and beyond exceptional customer service! If they don't have an item you're looking for they will try their best to find it and bring it in for you :) They carry items that you can not find anywhere else and they offer bird boarding, nail and wing clipping, DNA testing, cages, bird stands, unlimited advice and support, online shopping, wild bird supplies, and plenty more! If you have a feathered pet, you simply must visit Meikas - you will leave Meikas with a smile on your face and feeling like you found a new family 🙂

We finally made it over there today from west Edmonton and boy was I ever glad! It is a nice, clean shop with really new and interesting items that other shops don't have. There was a very friendly staff member who was there if you needed him to reply to inquiries but did not pounce on you as soon as you walked in (I just hate when they do that and you haven't even had chance to look). It is a smaller shop but has loads of new and interesting items and very reasonable prices. Support the local shops you will find it well worth it to go there!

Was new in the city at the McDonald's across the road and saw the store thought I should check it out . I own 3 parrots so when I entered the store coming from Calgary I was amazed . Instantly Ian greeted me with a smile and was wondering what brought me to their store .. I told him pure luck but I am sure I would have eventually made my

Not enough stars, but 5 will have to do. I can't say enough about how great the owners and staff of this store are. They have an excellent selection of products and supplies for your birds. I always look forwards to going in to the store, and am so happy and thankful for all the helpful information Ian and Janine have provided to help us with our flock. Without them, we never would have found the EPPA, never would have met a great group of people, never would have heard of Laura Joseph or animal behaviour. We never would have adopted our Lucy Loo, and never would have learned so much about birds and parrots. They're not just about selling you things, they're about helping to educate you to make informed decisions about birds. Hands down.... Best Bird Store Ever !!!

Just picked our birdies up from Meika’s after boarding them for a little more than a week. Our green cheek is amazing, exactly himself curious and cuddly. We would never bring him anywhere else. Gives us complete peace of mind having him cared for by people that know birds so well. Thank you so much!

I will not take my birds to anyone else to have their nails trimmed or any other type of upkeep. They do a far better job than I could ever manage plus their fee cannot be beat. They are extremely reasonable and very knowledgeable.



Even though I do not live close by they are well worth making the trip (even with all that horrid road construction going on this summer to all the access highways West of Sherwood Park).

I love Meika's for all my birdie needs! My birds get very excited to go see "Uncle Ian" for their "Wingie & Pedis". I won't take them anywhere else for this service. You are always get a smile when you arrive and the knowledge they share is amazing. My birds love the new food recommended!! Thanks again for everything you do.

I have never received such great advice about my three parrots as I have from Janine and Ian. When I go on vacation I travel 6 hours (one way) so that they can look after my parrots. I trust no one else with them. And they don't ever complain about my Eclectus who isn't easy to look after, they approach it with humour and an extreme amount of knowledge about parrot behaviour. I always make my own bird toys and stock up whenever I'm in town. Fantastic selection of goodies to make some awesome toys and a fantastic selection of already made toys. After all the years of knowing them I am proud to call them my friends and would recommend them to anyone for ANYTHING bird or parrot related!

I have known Janine who owns and operates Meika's Bird house and Meika's Safe House for some years now. During that time I have worked with Janine, on many occasions, helping with the rehabilitation of birds that have come into her care. In particular, Australian birds. I have grown to highly respect Janine for her compassion, dedication, commitment & caring for all birds & animals. Although I have never set foot in her shop, I have seen photos & videos and it has always been exceptionally clean and tidy. Janine's knowledge about all aspects of birds is way above average, and she is always willing to share this. Helping people to ensure their pet birds have an enriched, happy & meaningful life is something Janine is very passionate about.

I cannot thank Janine and Ian for their support over the years. As a bird guardian for almost 20 years I thought I knew a lot about birds until I had the pleasure of speaking to them and learning creative techniques for enhancement, stimulation and of course, that famous chop recipe Janine was kind enough to share with me. Janine is always so patient with my many questions and after losing our Sun Conure over a year ago, she provided encouragement and support in helping our Nanday Conure adjust to life without his friend. I cannot thank Ian and Janine enough for their support and friendship. If you are considering having a bird join your family, you must stop in at Meika's Birdhouse - they will tell you everything you need to know about birds, cages, nutrition and health and will help match you with the right bird.

Have a new addition to the family..midas is settling in just fine.I think we already have fallen in love.....

Fantastic service from fantastic people. Ian and Janine have been very patient with all the questions we come up with. I stumbled upon their store when I had my Lovebird and I always said when/if I was to get another bird it was going to be a rescue. We ended up adopting not one but three Conures from them and they have made a great addition to our home. It's nice to hear the chips and even the squawks again. We will continue to support your store and everything you guys do to help the ones that have found their way to you and of course we will bring Mango, Tango and Jimmy Bird for visits :)

Excellent service! It was a welcoming and homey environment as soon as we walked in the doors. And Ian was very kind and helpful! The store itself is very clean and the birds look very happy to be there. There were awesome unique toys and DIY pieces that my birds would love! Loved my experience here and will come back for future bird services and supplies.
