Homelessness is not an Us-versus-Them issue; it has been called a "wicked problem", meaning the only way to address it is with everybody at the table. In Riverdale many of us are well aware there are many people experiencing homelessness in and around our community. Their homes are campsites amongst the trees and parks, their belongings are often left behind along the trails, we witness all of this as we too live in Riverdale and enjoy the surrounding natural spaces. Some of ...us may have family members or friends who are living in various stages of homelessness. Did you know couch surfing is a form of homelessness? So how do we live together being as healthy and safe as possible for everyone? Is there a way to turn our disappointment and frustration into greater understanding or perhaps something positive, as we wait for big solutions by governments?
Please join us at this event where we will ask, "what is healthy community in the face of homelessness? How can each of us feel healthy and safe? And how can we maintain and build community health in this context?" Our goal is that you walk away from this night feeling supported where you are at; you may have some new tools, insights and understanding.
The evening will feature a short documentary, and a panel consisting of Boyle Street outreach workers and Riverdalians. There will be opportunity for questions and constructive conversation.
Light refreshments will be served, and we will bring the league's latte maker out of storage (with decaf option!). Enjoy the coffeehouse atmosphere and connect with your neighbours on this complex topic.
**This is a free event open to all Riverdalians. Sponsored by Riverdale Community League's Aboriginal Reconciliation Committee and part of the League's "Healthy Community" series.**
