Among the cornucopia of fruits and vegetables you’ll see piled high at your favourite farmer's market this month, there are a few that pair particularly well with The Silk Road’s blends and spices. Check out our suggestions in this blog post from our archive.

Looking for a new way to do potatoes? These delicious grilled baby potatoes from A Virtual Vegan are crispy on the outside & creamy on the inside.

This is our version of a classic Canadian spice blend. Ours differs a bit from the commercial version, mostly in that it contains way less salt. Instead, we blend a balance of cracked black pepper and coarse salt with coriander, chile flakes, dill, paprika, mustard seeds, garlic and onion. It is less salty and more flavourful than many other versions.
This blend is excellent for bringing out the flavour of beef, but can also be used for other meats and on potatoes. Try it as a dry rub on barbequed steaks and oven-roasted prime rib.

BLEND OF THE WEEK: Juniper Berry Spice Rub
Our Juniper Berry Spice Rub is a delicious blend of juniper berries, black peppercorns, fennel seeds, cloves, coriander, and coarse sea salt. It’s peppery and complex, but the piney flavour of juniper is definitely the star.
This rub is ideal for game meats like venison, duck or bison, but it will work just as well with beef or fatty fish like halibut.

BLEND OF THE WEEK: Lemon Pepper
Citrus and pepper are a classic combination, and for good reason. It appeals to almost everyone and it works on almost anything: poultry, pork, fish, vegetables. This is a great all-purpose blend, and is definitely a customer favourite.
Our lemon pepper blend gets its flavour from freshly ground black peppercorns and pure dried lemon peel. We add a bit of onion and sea salt to round out the taste, plus a touch of citric acid to boost the tartne...ss.

BLEND OF THE WEEK: Old Chicago Steak Spice
This blend is for all those purists who appreciate a good steak with not much more than salt and pepper to season it. We share that philosophy, but we’ve snuck just enough other good stuff into this blend to make your steak taste more like…steak. Salt and pepper for seasoning, hickory smoke powder to emphasize the grill flavour, a bit of sugar to help the blend caramelize, garlic, onion and a touch of citrus to bring it all together....
Old Chicago Steak Spice will not flavour your meat, but it will season it just the perfect amount to make it taste like its best possible self.

I support local businesses whenever possible, but I simply couldn't find a local source for Kala Namak or Curry Leaves, so I found your website while searching for a Canadian source for those essential ingredients of Indian cuisine. Among a few others things I ordered was a bag of Bay Leaves. I've bought Bay Leaves many, many times before (usually in dusty bottles from the grocery store display), and while I've dutifully used them as recipes called for, I honestly never really understood why I bothered.



Tonight I was making a pot of French Lentils, and remembered the bag of Bay Leaves I had tucked into the back of my spice drawer, so I added two leaves.



For the first time ever, I could immediately smell the oils being released from the leaves - and I suddenly understand what Bay Leaves are supposed to smell and taste like!!!

The processing and shipping was quick and easy, but the package ended up being lost in transit! In despair, I emailed the company to see what options were available and the company took care of everything! :D They contacted the shipping company, personally got into contact with me, and sent a new package. They even followed up to ensure I received the new one! Outstanding services and people. I will definitely be ordering again :D

They post recipes, inspiration and guidance on the website and Facebook and the atmosphere is cozy and warm. The staff have always been unbelievable. Got my first order today. Packaging was excellent and order arrived quickly, even to a mildly isolated part of Quebec. Everything seems so fresh and tastes great. Made a nice north African supper with it that my wife completely loved. Such unique options available I had never heard of like the Urfa Biber (which is a standout of the 15 items I received). Will be ordering again for sure.

Great selection, high quality. That being said found the staff at Inglewood location to be rude on more than one occasion. For that reason generally go to community natural or other natural food store.

Got my first order today. Packaging was excellent and order arrived quickly, even to a mildly isolated part of Quebec. Everything seems so fresh and tastes great. Made a nice north African supper with it that my wife completely loved. Such unique options available I had never heard of like the Urfa Biber (which is a standout of the 15 items I received). Will be ordering again for sure.

Great selection, high quality. That being said found the staff at Inglewood location to be rude on more than one occasion. For that reason generally go to community natural or other natural food store.

Over-priced. Go to an Indian spice market in the NE.

The event was organized with love for what they do at The Silk Road. It was an evening of learning, laughing and experiencing spice and flavour from all angles. The staff, owners and Beakerhead staff were amazing, helpful and engaged in the event just as much as I was.

I go there frequently for spices and to ask questions, and my experience with this function made me more aware of this business and people behind it

I support local businesses whenever possible, but I simply couldn't find a local source for Kala Namak or Curry Leaves, so I found your website while searching for a Canadian source for those essential ingredients of Indian cuisine. Among a few others things I ordered was a bag of Bay Leaves. I've bought Bay Leaves many, many times before (usually in dusty bottles from the grocery store display), and while I've dutifully used them as recipes called for, I honestly never really understood why I bothered.



Tonight I was making a pot of French Lentils, and remembered the bag of Bay Leaves I had tucked into the back of my spice drawer, so I added two leaves.



For the first time ever, I could immediately smell the oils being released from the leaves - and I suddenly understand what Bay Leaves are supposed to smell and taste like!!!

I originally discovered this store on a trip to Calgary from Ottawa. I loved it so much, I ordered spices online from their website. The processing and shipping was quick and easy, but the package ended up being lost in transit! In despair, I emailed the company to see what options were available and the company took care of everything! :D They contacted the shipping company, personally got into contact with me, and sent a new package. They even followed up to ensure I received the new one! Outstanding services and people. I will definitely be ordering again :D

I love this place!!! It has exquisite and cool atmosphere, and spices smell so good!!! I thought good spices are expensive, but they appeared to be surprisingly affordable - got 5 spice mixes right away, love all of them!!!

I love that they guide me as to the many ways to use their spices. So many times i pick something up for a specific reason and leave wanting to try it 5 more ways! They post recipes, inspiration and guidance on the website and Facebook and the atmosphere is cozy and warm. The staff have always been unbelievable. I am revamping and expanding my spice collection and this is my fav place to come!
