Edmonton's Whyte Avenue Art Walk grew from a desire to bring art and art-making to the public. It started with 35 artists in 1995. Now, over 400 diverse artists mingle with more than 30, 000 visitors. The festival is a labour of love for The Paint Spot as they have administered and supported the event since the beginning, 20 years ago. The Whyte Avenue Art Walk works in close partnership with the Old Strathcona Foundation and Old Strathcona Business Association and would not be possible without their support.

An original experience, the Whyte Avenue Art Walk is a time to celebrate all aspects of visual arts. There are thousands of art works on display. Artists are encouraged to bring their supplies and their ideas to make art right on site. This provides an exciting opportunity for visitors to become engaged in a variety of creative processes.

By bringing the studio to the Avenue, pedestrians are exposed to a rare feast of diverse artistic ventures. If they are curious about what they see, they can strike up a conversation with the artists themselves. If they love what they see, the Art Walk provides a more personal way of buying art, directly from the artist! Many people buy their first piece of original art at the Art Walk, and return each year to build their collection. Nurturing art patrons is a vitally important aspect of the Art Walk. Once individuals acquire original art they often continue to collect art throughout their lives.

For artists of all levels, the Whyte Avenue Art Walk offers a welcoming environment. For emerging artists, the Art Walk is a great learning experience. It is a time to gain valuable feedback, build contact lists, and raise profiles. The Art Walk showcases many professional artists and offers everyone the chance to meet and exchange ideas with one another. This event gives artists the opportunity to gain courage and challenge themselves by preparing an annual body of work. The Paint Spot also provides professional advice and leadership to help artists make the most of their Art Walk connections.

Immerse yourself in the dynamic world of visual art as an artist, spectator, or patron.

Purge unused materials and make space to create new art. Collect your treasures and sell them at The Paint Spot's first ever #artsupplyswap. Book a table now! There is space only for 23 tables.

This is perfect for a few hoarders we know....or if you are downsizing....or if your passion has developed towards watercolour instead of oil painting. Now is the time to sell. Other artists understand the value and need supplies. Reserved your table to sell, share, swap, trade-up, or barter. I bet some grid walls may find a new home too...if you want to haul them. Stay tuned for more fun activities around this event.

AMAZING Framing Tip:
I love @corissaodonnellarts (Follow her on instagram) and picked up this piece at The Whyte Ave Walk several years ago. I was rearranging art to fit more 'must-haves', 'can't-possibly-live-without 39; pieces from this year's event but found it awkward to find a perfect spot for this treasure. So I decided to touched up the frame using Gilder's Wax Paste (see next picture). It was a quick, super easy fix to shift the tone away from bossy gold to a more suitable gold. Now the art perfectly fits everywhere. First, I hope Corissa approves. Second, what do you think?

A big shout-out to our amazing volunteers - you all rocked! We drew names for the extra awesome goodies donated by our generous Old Strathcona businesses: John Fluvog Shoes, E-Exit, and the Billiards Club. Blues on Whyte, Chianti's and the Paint Spot also helped us show appreciation to our hard-working volunteers and each one received a thank you gift from them.
I'd also like to thank the following businesses in each of our promenade zones that generously welcomed our volunt...eers when they needed a water refill. This saved us from dumping an awful lot of plastic in the landfill! Thanks to Blakbar, Julio's Barrio, PIP and the Next Act, Under the Hight Wheel, Blues on Whute and Starbucks at 104 St. and Whyte Ave. Thanks!
And now.... (drum roll)... the winners are...
$200 gift certificate to John Fluvog Shoes: Chelsea Barter $25 gift certificate to E-Exit escape room: Piyush Patel $25 gift certificate to E-Exit escape room: Hilary Meng $25 gift certificate to E-Exit escape room: Payton Warren $25 gift certificate to E-Exit escape room: Rita Turner $25 gift certificate for the Billiard's Club: Emily Derbyshire $25 gift certificate for the Billiard's Club: Robyn O'Brien $25 gift certificate for the Billiard's Club: Robert Wuetherick Crimson Aglow watercolour print by Terry Smith: Gloria Hunchak
Winners of this draw can pick up their prize at the Paint Spot 10032 81 Ave. They're open 9:30 am - 6 pm weekdays and Saturday, late on Thursday until 9 pm and Sunday from noon - 5 pm.
