Tragic in every way. Force free is scientifically proven and dominance training has been debunked - hopefully we will see positive changes for all dogs in the future

Callie | Female | Lab | Rescue Story:
Came to Zoe's to find my forever home.
... Date of Birth: Approx 8 years
Energy Level: Medium
Size (adult): I am a 90 pound beautiful Lab.
Good with Dogs? Yes
Good with Cats? No
Good with Kids? Yes Critter Twitter:
My foster mama tells me I'm wonderful everyday! She tries to keep up with my daily walks but sometimes can't so I go to doggie daycare to walk and play off my energy, otherwise I will moan a lot! Cuz I want to go and stretch my legs, and have a look around. Plus I'm fantastic on leash so I would like an active home please.
About my Behaviour:
I'm a gentle gal that just loves my peeps and wants to have dog friends. I know how to sit, stay, down and heel.
How’s my Health?
I had an undiagnosed food allergy so I spend years with itchy paws and a sore to my back leg that I've licked and licked for comfort. It was very big and tender but my foster mama knew the problem right away so I'm now on a chicken and grain free diet. To help my large sore continue to heal, I'm on antibiotics and antihistamine. I'm a healthy and active gal otherwise and I've recently been spayed, vaccinated and dewormed.

Zoe’s Animal Rescue is full to bursting with kittens and cats. Still, people message and call us each day - asking us to please take more. Young ones, old ones, singly or in groups.
There are too many.
... We live in a city where it is illegal to abandon a cat but there is no enforcement to prevent this.
We have a confusing bylaw where cats are allowed to roam on public property but not private property and it is up to a property owner to deal with a trespassing cat.
The city often directs to leave found cats where they are and not to bring them in to animal control.
It is not illegal to have unfixed cats. It’s not illegal to sell or give away kittens. There are an estimated 70000 feral (wild) cats in the Edmonton area and most are not fixed. Most non profits are not allowed to fix and return the feral cats to in city areas. Each year litters of kittens are born and need rescuing. Many, many litters.
We are so full that we are forced to say no to animals that need us.
Every rescue is.
We are tired and frustrated and so sad and we are, all of us, volunteers and fosters, feeling so overwhelmed and seeing compassion fatigue in each other. That is a terrible thing.
Things need to change for the better.
It is time to fix them all.
Zoe’s has a thriving free and low cost spay and neuter program and we can do much more. With more funding and as many vet clinics and other groups as possible joining us, we know we can fix them all. (Or close enough.)
It works.
https://www.aspca.org/…/shelter-…/clo ser-look-community-cats
A cat in Edmonton should be a fixed cat.
Simple as that.
Let’s make it happen.
Feel free to share.

Ok, ok, ok then hurry up and fill out an application form, I’m waiting for you!!! #leader
About my Behaviour:
Sure, some call me bossy, I call it leadership. I was an orphan, I had to fight mother nature to live and boy did I fight! Now don’t get me wrong, I love to play and cuddle like the best of them, but I make the rules!!! I also don't really enjoy sharing eating at the same dish so I'd prefer separate bowls. I would be ok on my own as long as I get lots of attention and play time.

Zoe's is an absolutely amazing group of people with HUGE hearts who truly care about the wellbeing of all the animals that come through their doors. They are amazing to volunteer/foster with and have a great relationship with their adopters. Their goal is to ensure every animal finds their perfect happily ever after and they want to set the adopters up for success. I am so proud to be a part of this wonderful organization who goes above and beyond every single day.

User

Zoe's is a great rescue. The volunteers are always about the animals first. They have helped so many people in so many ways without feeling a need to boast or seek accolades. They have placed so many animals in loving homes. They will work with adopters endlessly if they need help. These wonderful volunteers come from all walks of life to do their very best to make the lives of as many needy animals better without ego. I am in awe & also very appreciative of such a great group!

User

Zoe's has shown me how much they really care about their animals, not only when the animals are in their care, but post adoption. I adopted a senior cat from them, and within a couple of weeks, the poor old guy had started upchucking more than normal. Off to the vet, blood tests, checkup, and it's found that he has pretty severe kidney issues which Zoe's couldn't have possibly known about. I was heartbroken as I thought that meant he had to be put down. I got a call from Zoe's and they kindly told me that kidney disease can be managed if I was willing to care for him and that he could have a few more months, or even years. They also indicated that I would not be judged if a decision was made to euthanize him. They also took care of his vet bills, further blood tests and medication which helped me out a lot. I so appreciate Zoe's for fully supporting not only the animals, but the people that care for the animals. Odie is still going and it's been almost a year...he is enjoying life thanks to Zoe's <3

We adopted our two sweet kittens, brothers Boris and Viktor. An amazing group of people!!!

User

We adopted our purrfect pal McJagger from Zoe’s. The level of care that the animals get is amazing!

User

We adopted our dog Molly through Zoe's. Having dealt with other rescues before, Zoe's really impressed me and made sure they did what was best for Molly. (Which was luckily to be placed with us) they really have the best interest of the animal at heart, which is the most important thing. We would highly recommend them, and it was a joy dealing with them throughout the Adoption process.

User

We adopted our darling Harriet (Guavari Sanskrit) from Zoe’s. The organization was excellent to work with. They were responsible, reliable and so helpful throughout the whole process. The amount of love and care that the organization puts into each animal is so apparent. Thanks to everyone at Zoe’s for all that you do!

User

We adopted Moose, a gorgeous mastiff mix, through Zoe's. I appreciate the process was thorough to make sure the animal is matched to the right home/family for them. I feel Zoe's has been excellent with communication before, during, and after the adoption and organized throughout the process. The well-being of their animals is top priority, but they also care about the people adopting them too and are very supportive during the time of transitioning from foster to forever home.. and I'm sure long after that as well. Nothing but good things to say about our experience with Zoe's!

User

The most loving, kind hearted, and open minded group of people. They truly have the animals best interest in mind. I adore that they are dedicated to force free, science based training methods. Its no wonder their return rate is so low. Keep doing what you do, one animal at a time you guys are making a difference!

User

I'm a volunteer photographer with ZOE's and I adopted my sweet kitten from them! I love volunteering and working with the other volunteers. Everyone is hardworking and genuinely cares about the animals. Moreover, I love my kitten! He's such a little munchkin and I couldn't be happier. It was a smooth adoption process and I have a happy, healthy fur baby in my home.

User

I recently adopted a 10 week old puppy from Zoe’s animal rescue!

The process took about a week and I interacted with three volunteers. All of the volunteers treated me with respect and had the best interest of the dog in mind at all times.

The foster family was extremely flexible and made it easy to come visit the pup before making the decision to adopt her.

The foster mom also drove across the city for a home visit to see how my current dog and the new puppy would interact.

On top of these visits I also had a volunteer come and teach me more about the organization and reminding me of training and puppy tips! They truly want to set you up for success!

Our puppy has been amazing (especially for a puppy)! She was quick to potty training, already had interacted with dogs at her foster home, was already being crated at night, and sit/ stay commands were well on their way!

I would highly recommend Zoe’s animal rescue for anyone looking to adopt a new furry friend!

User

I just adopted a dog from Zoe's and they are amazing to deal with! The adoption process was smooth and easy. Very thorough and I definitely loved that! Would highly recommend Zoe's!

User

I have to say we're very impressed by Zoe's, their volunteers and foster parents. The adoption process was detailed and thorough as it should be but it was also smooth. A lot of great, dedicated hard working people made it possible for us to give a super awesome dog a forever home. My heart breaks when I hear what some of these animals have been through. I've always been an advocate for rescuing before buying and Zoe's provided us with a wonderful experience. It was clear that everyone we spoke to was passionate and really cared. Thank you to everyone on the Zoe's team for the great work you do every day!

User

I have fostered cats/kittens with Zoe's for just over a year now and can say that the group of volunteers are true animal lovers. Although it ultimately gives us so much joy to see an animal that was in our care go to a loving forever home, we don't take the process of getting to that point lightly. In whatever role we play in the organization, the best interests of each and every animal are ALWAYS the number one priority. I've seen this organization scrape the bottom of the bank to help animals in need, without hesitation, and I (sadly) can't say I see that too often anywhere else. Zoe's solely exists for the well being of animals and I highly recommend anyone looking to adopt, foster, or volunteer in any way to look into Zoe's.

User

I could not be more impressed with how Zoe's really puts the animal's best interest before anything else. The adoption process has a few steps but all worth it to make sure both animal and adopter are a good fit. We had an amazing experience during the adoption process. Within a week of submitting our application, we were contacted for a meet and greet. The meet and greet took place at the foster home, which is great as you see the dog more comfortable and is easier to read how they would be once they are home. We were told during the meet and greet that they thought we were a great fit and told us that a home visit would be scheduled. The home visit with Andrea was fantastic. She gave us so much information about being a new dog owner. Shortly after the home visit we were able to pick up our new family member, Buddy. Nicole, the foster, had contacted me a couple of times after the adoption to see how Buddy was settling in. It really warmed my heart how much everyone at Zoe's really cares. It also impressed me how quick the response time is for inquiries since it is volunteer based. I would highly recommend going through Zoe's if you are looking to rescue a furry friend. Thank you Zoe's for helping us add to our family!

User

I can’t say enough great things about Zoe’s. We adopted our dog Shiloh through them, and we found the entire process to be smooth and easy, but also very thorough. They very obviously care a lot about the animals they rescue and their biggest concern is finding stable forever homes for them. I would recommend Zoe’s to anyone that is serious about adopting an animal.

User

Amazing group of people that truly care about the well being of animals. LOVE the lengthy adoption process. We did not have that with the rescue we got our other girl from. It worries me to think of how easily she could have been placed in a family who didn't understand or weren't willing/able to work on her fears and anxieties, and where she would have ended up. Zoe's went above and beyond to make sure it was a good fit for everyone involved and that was so greatly appreciated. I also really appreciate that they are members of the Alberta Force Free Alliance and only recommend positive reinforcement and force free training methods. That alone shows how much they care about responsible pet ownership. Thanks for bringing sweet Moo into our family!

User

Amazing and compassionate people. I'm amazed with how genuine and heartfelt they are with all their animals. Truly the best.

We adopted our purrfect pal McJagger from Zoe’s. The level of care that the animals get is amazing!

The most loving, kind hearted, and open minded group of people. They truly have the animals best interest in mind. I adore that they are dedicated to force free, science based training methods. Its no wonder their return rate is so low. Keep doing what you do, one animal at a time you guys are making a difference!

I just adopted a dog from Zoe's and they are amazing to deal with! The adoption process was smooth and easy. Very thorough and I definitely loved that! Would highly recommend Zoe's!
