Just thought you might be wondering what a guy that looks like he is abut 59. 12 years old getting into an accounting practice in 2010? Well it isn't what it looks like! Let me tell you that thanks to some good "tough" training at Deloitte's, I got my CA in the 60's and then spent the rest of those great years (I listen to 96. 3 FM) and into the 70's in Rabaul, Papua New Guinea. After almost dieing from an assortment of tropical diseases, came back to Canada and after getting my MBA at Western (man the tuition was cheap then! ) came back to Edmonton and after a few run ins with "bosses" decided to "kick off" my own public accounting practice in Sherwood Park which worked out pretty well and allowed me to be business man of the year and Chamber president right at the time when the GST came in and even though my accounting friends saw the GST as a "money maker" for the profession, all I could see was "red". Surprising how many people still remember the "resistance" and the only good thing about the GST was that Harper brought it down a couple of points. If he ever gets in trouble politically going after the GST is a sure winner! (just ask Jean Chretien in 1993)! In 2005 after 24 years I sold my partnership share and had my sights on making some "real" $$$ selling businesses as a business broker. Had reasonble success especially with NAI Commercial (business brokerage division) and just as I thought I was going to "break out" the end of 2008 came along and "dropped" me with a "thud". Being an "old" Wildcat that may have lost a "few" games but was never "beaten" I did what I always did when I hit the "wall" and that is to go back into accounting with a bit more real life experience then before to go along with the "Ivey" MBA that allows me the look at financial statement and tax planning from a little "broader" perspective. I still kept my real estate license (my broker is Realty Executives Polaris) for those special business brokerage deals that come up (so far "no cigar")! I have been working on one mfg. for a year and hopefully I have come up with a solution that we can get into later. My primary focus is public accounting (small to medium sized businesses as well as personal and corporate tax) and I have great staff and partners that can get the "job" done!
