I received notice a few weeks ago but have been so busy with everything happening at Airdrie Music Lessons that I have not taken time to share this news.
For the second year in a row, The Airdrie Mayor's Night Of The Arts has named me as a finalist for the Arts Educator Of The Year Award,
... The awards show is on Saturday, January 26th so there are still a few months to until this years' winner is announced.
Hopefully, if the award is given to another finalist this time around, Ayla will take it better (the poor little thing cried her heart out at the last awards show when they gave the award to another (very deserving) arts educator. She was convinced I was there to take home the award and that she'd finally get to meet the Mayor in person!).

I’m pleased to invite you to the first “Zero Drama Music Practice Tips” workshop evening for parents and students.
Learning music can change a person’s life. Science has shown that kids who study music score higher on IQ tests, demonstrate important brain hemisphere synchronization, and develop important creative and academic skills that help them become more successful in life.
But, getting kids to practice music at home can sometimes be a confusing and frustrating process ...for parents. Kids often love music, love attending class and love sharing their talents but they can encounter struggles outside the classroom when trying to put the musical pieces together.
As a parent and as a musician, I am very aware of the internal and external challenges when it comes to finding success with music. I’m offering this special event to help other parents and their kids so that the students can get the most out of their lessons, the most out of their practice time at home, AND parents can relax and enjoy the musical journey by using the tips, tools, and tricks I’ll share through live practice session demonstrations.

This practice tip for parents of young musicians comes from a friend, Trevor Grant, who is an amazingly talented and dedicated drummer and teacher who has some of the most entertaining and insightful stories from his drum studio.
- Remove The Stump -
Imagine yourself going for a daily run on a beautiful forest trail. One morning, you come to a spot where you trip over a stump and fall to the ground. You pick yourself up, a little worse for the wear, and carry on.
... The next morning, you run the same path and, again, you trip over that annoying stump. You end up scraped and bruised but you pick yourself up and keep going.
This scenario plays out over and over, day after day. You go for an invigorating jog through the woods and trip over the same stupid stump every single day.
Does this make any sense at all? Would anyone really go through the frustration and pain of tripping over the same stump day after day?
Wouldn't it make more sense to REMOVE THE STUMP before taking your next run through the woods?
This example might seem silly but this is a metaphor what inexperienced musicians do all the time when practicing - they trip over spots in the song or exercise they are practicing again and again.
Not only does this habit prevent musicians from mastering the difficult part of the music they are working on, it actually makes things much worse!
By repeating a mistake over and over, neuroscientists tell us that students actually build and strengthen neural pathways in the brain that will reinforce the error.
Accomplished musicians STOP as soon as they encounter a problem spot (THE STUMP) and deal with it right then and there.
I'll share more details one how to do this in the next "Practicing Tip For Parents" post but, for now, notice when your child is practicing - does he/she barrel through the difficult parts of a song or does he/she notice when a stump is on the path and try to deal with it?

I'm so proud of these kids!
They had a great class this week and are starting to delve into their new song, "Hello". It's a very different song than their last song stylistically but, it builds on the knowledge they acquired when they learned "Obla Di Obla Da".
In this song, they will learn about playing in a minor key, they'll be introduced to slash chords for the first time, they'll learn how to "roll" chords, and they'll finally get to use the sustain pedals!

One of the things I really struggled with during my first year of my Classical Music degree was ear training. That's why I feel it's so important to help young singers learn to decode melodies early on.
Watch how Mark​ walks them through some of the tips and tricks that will help their brains gradually learn how to decode the notes.
It's fascinating to witness how their brains literally wire up to understand the language of music as the weeks progress. They are, after all, l...earning how to interpret a new language! Very cool stuff.

I'm SO grateful that Stephanie didn't give up on pursuing music for her son and that her son didn't give up along the way!
The funny thing is that, years ago, I resisted teaching piano even though my students and their parents kept asking me to.
... Why did I resist? Because I didn't want to teach piano in the traditional way. I didn't want my students to suffer through piano. I wanted them to actually learn and enjoy the experience.
It took some time for me to form a clear vision, create a program and apply my own approach to teaching piano but now I'm glad I did.

My daughters started music lessons with Anthony 3 years ago. He was recommended by numerous people! They take voice lessons, guitar, and rock band. Anthony has such a great teaching style and they love his sense of humor! They have grown in their music knowledge and skill, and also have gained so much confidence! The concert evenings twice a year are so well prepared and so much fun - its been a pleasure to be in Anthony's group, and we are thankful we met Anthony!

My daughter (now 9) has been going to Anthony's singing classes for a couple of years now and loves it!! She is usually quite shy (to begin) and I was so nervous to watch her go on stage but she was so comfortable with the wonderful group of girls in her group that she walked up with such confidence! They did awesome! She always talks about the fun she has in class with Anthony and her group and always looks forward to each week!

I started trying to learn to play guitar when I was 13 with a music teacher that was not inspiring or patient. Needless to say I did not thrive in that class or environment, and I made a decision to stop. I now regret that I did not find another teacher sooner to continue to learn and have music as part of my life. After multiple tries with online guitar teaching websites I met Anthony through a local add, and started taking lessons a few weeks later. What has previously been confusing and complicated with other methods has become simple and straight forward and fun. I'm no longer scared to experiment with my guitar and my playing and I'm comfortable playing with friends and family now, which is a dream come true. I can say with absolute certainty that Anthony’s approach engages children and adults alike, and inspires them to grow. Anthony is a step above other music teachers, he truly enjoys the students and seeing them improve and learn the music. He makes that extra effort for the students which creates such a positive and creative desire for music.

Derek has learned piano so quickly from Anthony. He seems right at home in front of his keyboard after only half a session of weekly lessons. The group setting is wonderful for a shy kid like my son to be involved in. He very much surprised me with his ease on stage and I attribute that, in part, to the environment he learned in. The other part is the encouragement and dedication from Anthony. Thank you Anthony and your family for all you do for all of the people, not just kids, that come into your life!

Anthony shares his fantastic gift of music with every person he meets. Our 14 year old daughter is in her third year of guitar and voice and has found her passion through Anthony's positive upbeat classes. As a parent I highly recommend his programs for any age young to old!
