Airforce Museum Society Of Alberta Description

Air Force Museum Of Alberta

Opened in 2009, the Air Force Museum of Alberta (AFMA) is the newest addition to The Military Museums. Website rcaf. museum
The AFMA chronicles the story of Canada’s Air Force through artifacts, models, interactive displays, and unique films. Although the Royal Canadian Air Force was not founded until 1 April 1924, the AFMA begins with the 15th century flying machine of Leonardo da Vinci and ends with the modern role of the Royal Canadian Air Force, covering the magnificent legacy of Canada’s war-time contributions in between.

The Curtis collection. Dr. Glenn Curtis, the grandson of Air Marshall (AM) W.A. Curtis, recently donated the collection to Colonel (Ret’d) Don Matthews, Chairman of the Air Force Museum Society of Alberta. The collection includes the honours and decorations that the Air Marshall was awarded during his lengthy service to Canada. The AM joined the army in 1915 and transferred to the Royal Naval Air Service in 1916 and RAF in 1918. He recorded four aircraft destroyed and nine fo...rced down out of control. During WW 2, as a Wing Commander, he helped organize the British Commonwealth Air Training Plan (BCATP), served as the Deputy Air Officer Commanding the RCAF Overseas Headquarters and as a member of the Air Council. In 1947 he was appointed Chief of the Air Staff with the rank of Air Marshall. He pushed for the acquisition of the CF-100 and other modern aircraft during his term in office. He retired in 1953 and held significant positions in the civil aviation field where he continued to play a major role in the development of both civil and military aviation . . . a true giant in the annals of RCAF history and Canadian aviation.

The CBC featured a story about former 104 pilot and artist, Andrew Henwood, on their national news program. It's about one Starfighter painting among many Henwood painted when he was serving with 422 Squadron at #4 Wing in 1967. This one showed up in a thrift shop in Calgary fifty-one years after he painted it: http://www.cbc.ca/player/play/13030349478 83/

The Air Force Museum of Alberta is pleased to announce it is an accredited member of the Alberta Museums Association (AMA). The AMA encourages provincial museums to uphold standards of professionalism to best meet their responsibilities to the public trust. The AMA offers a variety of programs and services that benefit accredited museums and we look forward to partaking in these opportunities.

The Queen’s Guard, as the group is called while performing Public Duties, are Canadian Armed Forces members charged, in support of the civil authorities, with guarding the Sovereign and the official royal residences in the United Kingdom. These include Buckingham Palace, St. James’s Palace, Windsor Castle, and the Tower of London.

We were pleased to welcome Dr. John Maris and Gen (Rtd) Paul Manson and some of their family to the AFMSA display today. They, along with Dr. Greg Powell and John Bogie will be inducted into the Canadian Aviation Hall of fame this evening.
