Alberta University Of The Arts

About Alberta University Of The Arts

Alberta University of the Arts is a leading centre for education and research, and a catalyst for creative inquiry and cultural development.

Alberta University Of The Arts Description

Alberta College of Art + Design is located in Calgary on the North Hill overlooking the Bow River and the downtown skyline, in a 245, 000 square foot building that was designed in 1973 specifically as an art college. ACAD's close proximity to downtown, via light rail transit, is a distinct advantage to our students, providing them with easy access to Calgary's galleries, museums and cultural events.

ACAD is committed to a solid studio-based experience for students in fine art, design and new media - an experience balanced with relevant, complementary liberal studies and practical theory. The result is a rigorous studio program, which produces innovative thinkers, creative problem solvers, and visually talented students. ACAD creates a learning environment rich in character and extensive in quantity, quality and professional capability for its student body of artistic thinkers.

ACAD studios are extremely spacious and classes are small, allowing for regular one-on-one interaction. Faculty and space-per-student ratios are among the best in the country. Within this environment, students receive the techniques, tools, intellectual stimulation and encouragement to discover and develop their own personal voice and passion.

At ACAD, you’ll have the chance to collaborate with, and learn from,
some of Canada’s most exciting artists and designers. With a vibrant community of award winning faculty, internationally recognized alumni mentors, and students who are as passionate about art and design as you are, you can’t help but be inspired.

ACAD is deeply saddened to hear about the passing of one of our own, Ken Sturdy. Sturdy was a beloved faculty member at the Provincial Institute of Technology + Art (PITA) in the mid 1950's and 70's and played an integral role as the Head of the Alberta College of Art (ACA) from 1974 -1982. He was a veteran of WWII and was only 20 when he helped evacuate stranded soldiers during the Battle of Dunkirk. Ken obtained viral popularity when he caught the attention of the media wit...h his attendance during the Calgary premiere of the movie "Dunkirk". He was 98 years old, and a symbol of the strength and longevity of ACAD. Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family. . . ACAD Alumni Kyle Simmers + Ryan Danny Owen launched a Kickstarter for an awesome indie-comic. Pass Me By is a queer rural tragedy in the form of a five book series following Ed, a reserved man dealing with dementia in a small Northern Canadian Town. As Ed’s memory declines he loses touch with the present and revisits a past he chose to forget.
Check it out and provide them some support if you're so inclined...

Went through the Design stream, majoring in Illustration, graduated in 2011. world-class instructors at ACAD, industry veterans with much wisdom to share. Admin is effective and unobtrusive, campus is architecturally unique, and there's nothing quite like a campus covered in its own students' art installations.

I went to ACAD as a mature student from 1995-1999. Majored in the Jewellery and Metals program. It was one of the best experiences of my life! Challenging and fun.

I went there 1968 to 1972 just after their golden years with Illingworth Kerr et all. But my years were just great. We were in older buildings but they were spacious and had a whole long wall of windows, which were so inspiring, we didnt think of it at all, but now I see how ideal a situation that was. The classes were small enough that we could all operate as a cohesive group learning from the other students. It was the one place in my life where I felt important and a part of something. The instructors were varied and each was special and had something unique to impart. I would go back in a nano second.

I was a student at the Alberta College of Art + Design in the early 90's and it has left a deep rooted lasting impression on me. The instructors were inspirational. The students were accepting of me as a much older student. It was amazing to attend, be a part of and now I let everyone know, it was fabulous. If you can meet the mandatory admissions, which are very difficult now a days, please give it a go. You will learn learn learn and have the adventure of your life. Thanks Judy Walters

I was a mere 17 year old artist when I started at ACAD in 1994. Hailing from Okotoks, I took a commuter bus, then the C-Train all the way to northern Calgary.

After I got accustomed to my new schedule, ACAD became my second home, and my instructors my new mentors who showed me how much more I could be:)

User

Best school ever.. have fun and explore your talents. I would love to teach a class there on the realities of a freelance photographer... cheers

User

I was part of the student group in the 80’s that got the initial college status for ACA. Always in my heart
