Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association - Abvta Description

In 1978, a group of professionals trained in animal care, formed the Alberta Association of Animal Health Technologists (AAAHT). In 2017, Resolution 1 was presented and passed at the Annual General Meeting to change the operating name of the Association to the Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association, or ABVTA, to better represent the protected title of veterinary technologist and create uniformity in Canada in the veterinary profession.

People expect high quality health care and a wide range of specialized services to be available for the care of their pets and livestock. To ensure this demand for high quality veterinary care is met, the veterinary profession was legislated by the Alberta Government under the Veterinary Professions Act (VPA). Under current legislation, the veterinary technologist is identified and regulated within the components of the VPA and Regulations attached to the Act. The ABVTA takes an active role in ensuring only highly trained, qualified individuals are performing those aspects of veterinary medicine allowed by law.

The vision of the Alberta Veterinary Technologist Association is “Professional, knowledgeable, compassionate animal health care”. The Mission statement of the ABVTA is “to engage, support and inspire our members to provide exceptional veterinary care”.
