About Antigua & Barbuda Association Of Calgary

The Antigua & Barbuda Association of Calgary is a non profit organization that exists to aid Caribbean culture

Antigua & Barbuda Association Of Calgary Description

The Antigua and Barbuda Association of Calgary was founded by Ms. Tina Benjamin on November 1st 1981 with an initial membership of five. The membership grew quickly to thirty-five individuals by the following year. On November 1st 1983 the Association was incorporated under the Societies Act of the Province of Alberta.

The first President was Mr. Gordon Christopher. The Association’s meetings were held in Tina’s basement for a very long time until the Calgary Police Services (Community Relations Branch) allowed us to use their center in Mayland Heights for several years. After that, the venue kept changing to wherever we could find a meeting place or at a member’s home.

In 2001, the Association obtained its own building. The building is used by various community groups. A number of theatrical groups have also used the building for practices. The building is available to the public to host meetings and other small functions as well.

The membership is open to anyone who wants contribute to the Caribbean community and Calgary’s dynamic sense voluntarism. We donate money to other non-profit organizations in the Calgary area such as The Mustard Seed Foundation, The Cancer Society, and The Calgary Women’s Shelter.

We believe that education is very important. As such, in the year 2000 we started offering scholarships to students pursuing full time post secondary education. The recipients are subject to an approval process to qualify for the scholarship. Our goal is to help as many young people as possible to further their education.

Celebrating Antigua and Barbuda's Independence
In recognition of Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence Day November 1, 1981, we will be hosting a dinner party on Saturday, November 3 at the hall. We invite you to join us for this historic event. Watch for invitations via email next week.
As part of our Independence Day festivities, we would like to collect your thoughts and memories of what that day meant to you. Whether you were in Antigua and Barbuda at the time of independenc...e or you were here or some other country, share with us what significance it held for you, how you, your family, your friends celebrated, how you expressed the pride, enthusiasm and spirit our independence inspired in you.
This is a way to not only remind us of the importance of being close to our roots, but to help our youth realize what Independence Day meant to all of us at the time, and what it still means today.
To share your story or memory of Antigua and Barbuda’s Independence Day take a few minutes to provide your input by sending a message to our Antigua & Barbuda Association page on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/antiguabarbudaca lgary/.
All submissions are due by end of day Sunday, October 27.
Written submissions must not exceed 250 words. Video recordings must not exceed 3 minutes.
On behalf of the executive team, I thank you in advance for helping us remember the importance of our independence.
Sincerely,
Twyla Clarke,
President, Antigua & Barbuda Association of Calgary

What can I say besides thank you. I've attended a couple of the free sewing/knitting/crocheting Saturday classes offered by the association and am blown away by how much I've learned and by the lovely group of people (teachers and attendees) who gather each week to meet and support each other in learning something new. Thank you for giving your us your time! this is really a great event and I look forward to attending over the next months.

Such lovely, patient ladies welcoming anyone eager to learn crocheting, knitting, or sewing. Looking forward to becoming a 'bonafide' member, and voting at your general meeting Friday. You will feel welcome here.

User

My Family enjoy going to all the events.

I've been attending the crochet, knit or sew classes on Saturdays and I love it here. The ladies are so friendly and helpful. The class is open and easy going. I would highly recommend.

I attended the free sewing/knitting Saturday class and I learned a lot from the instructors and the attendees. They were patient to teach and were enthusiastic about sharing their knowledge and experience. They answered questions, offered advice and encouraged everyone. I will definitely take more of the classes.
