About Aseniwuche Winewak Nation

The members of Aseniwuche Winewak Nation (AWN) are non-status Indians descended from Cree and Beaver tribes from the northern Rocky Mountains. AWN was incorporated in 1994 and represents six Indigenous communities in Grande Cache, Alberta.

Aseniwuche Winewak Nation Description

We are descended from Beaver, Sekani and Shuswap who lived in the Jasper area and eastern Rocky Mountains, and from Cree, Iroquois, Sioux, and Ojibwa who came west. Although our People are linked to the First Nations across Canada, our community has not recognized Constitutional status. Our people were not signed to a Treaty, nor were the granted Metis Scrip. We are the "Forgotten People"

We are one of the last tribes in Alberta, even Canada, to face the cultural upheaval faced by Aboriginal people in the last century. There were no roads or development near us until Grande Cache was built in 1969. Our Elders lived in teepees and wickiups. They survived by using their traditional skills to gather, hunt, and trap. Before development encroached, life was as it always had been.
