Aurum Lodge

About Aurum Lodge

Welcome to Aurum Lodge, Alberta's unique and award-winning eco-tourism lodge and cabin near Banff Park. Close to nature - far from the crowds.

Aurum Lodge Description

Aurum Lodge is a unique eco-tourism accommodation facility, which was planned, built and is operated with minimal environmental impact. Our property is a wilderness retreat for nature lovers, who wish to unwind in a pristine setting or engage in low-impact outdoor activities in the region.
We offer two distinctly separate products (six different guestrooms & three self-contained units).
We are situated in the front ranges of the Rocky Mountains in the Province of Alberta, close to Banff National Park. This allows you to explore the many natural attractions such as waterfalls, lakes, rivers, forests and mountains. Flowers and wildlife are abundant both inside and outside of the parks.
Popular activities for our guests include:
Hiking, biking, riding, canoeing, climbing, ice-climbing, snow-shoeing, etc. Visiting historic and native sites, tourism highlights of the parks, photography, tours of the area, relaxation.
This is the place to get away from it all…

A proposal has just been announced to have parts of Bighorn Country protected through the creation of a number of parks. This was long overdue and we congratulate the AB government for having the smarts and the foresight to act pro-actively. The proposed changes and a public survey can be found at https://talkaep.alberta.ca/bighorn-countr y .
Whereas we would like to see even more protection, a plan like this will never satisfy everyone completely. There are too many divergi...ng interests and no willingness on the part of some user groups to compromise. The environment and the silent majority always have and will continue to lose out in the process.
Anyone reading the plan in detail will likely agree that this is a balanced and reasonable proposal, which continues to provide sufficient access to all user groups, while hopefully preserving this unique region for future generations. Too much damage has occurred in the past few years by users who feel entitled to do whatever, whenever and wherever they want on public land, damaging the land and ruining the enjoyment for others.
As an area operator, we support the plan in principle and encourage everyone to review and respond to the proposal – not impulsively, but by looking at the facts: without lasting protection, you will lose what you love, no matter which side you are on.

When our good friend and accomplished photographer Darwin Wiggett of www.oopoomoo.com fame guided our November photography tours, he called them the "fire and ice" tours for good reason! November is one of the best seasons for spectacular sunsets and sunrises in the area and a great time to be out there: the crowds have gone, wildlife returns to the valley, Abraham Lake is at its best and rivers are running clear, with ice forming on small ponds and along the shore. And all this while not having to worry about frostbite...

Area visitors will often encounter the wild horses in the Nordegg area. The black group are descendants of horses which were used underground in the Brazeau colliery over 60 years ago. As we experience a wonderful Indian Summer right now, we are closing down until month end to catch up on maintenance and repairs which we could not get done this past summer. See you in November.

My husband surprised me with a trip to Alberta for some rest and relaxation. We stayed at the Aurum Lodge for 4 nights and we were very impressed. This little hidden gem is nestled on highway 11. We were able to take day trips to Banff and Jasper and return to this little piece of heaven. The lodge is immaculately clean and very cozy. The views around the property are breath taking. Also, near by you can explore several scenic viewpoints and hiking routes or you could take the drive to Nordegg for some amazing pie at the Miners Café. Our hosts Alan and Madeline were top notch. They were so accommodating of our needs and gave us excellent advice for our day trips. We really enjoyed sitting around the dinner table with them at night and having a laugh. It was like visiting with old friends. Don't overlook this beautiful place If we return to the Rockies, we most definitely will stay here.

My family and myself enjoyed our stay greatly. It was relaxing, family friendly, interesting and everything felt healthy. There were many hikes, small and big. Alan's informations were accurate and enhanced the experience - as did Madeleines kitchen. We keep best memories and would like to return one day - thanks for all!

I came up to Lake Abraham Lake for a travel job and was deciding on a cheaper hotel option in the town of Nordegg before I called and spoke with Alan and Madeline at Aurum Lodge. Knowing I was going to be at the lake every day, and not looking forward to a 30-minute drive back and forth to Nordegg each day, I decided to pay a little more to stay at Aurum Lodge for 4 nights and I can't begin to tell you how smart of a choice that was! Talk about value for the price! Alan and Madeline run an amazing operation at the eco-tourism lodge. The place is run on 85% solar power and they are true believers in living as you can with little damage to the land around you, as well as the environment. It's also the only hotel in town on the lake thats open in the wintetime. From a lodge run by just Alan and his wife, they sure do a great job at keeping their guest comfortable, relaxed, and stuffed! I visited and stayed in one of the cottages that you bring your own food and cook your own meals, as there was another photo group in the main building that is more all inclusive where your meals are taken care of. Being able to have dinner with them one evening and getting to know everyone around a family style dinner table and buffet, was so much fun. You feel like you are at your Aunt’s or Uncles place visiting, their hospitality is so genuine and caring.

Alan went above and beyond with giving his time to myself and showing me around the lake and even finding some Bighorn Sheep! It was spectacular to be able to learn all about Abraham Lake through Alan’s eyes and be able to take pictures with him on the lake in -17 degree Celsius weather! My fingers are still numb from over a week ago! So thank you again for the kind hospitality you gave me as your guest Alan.

They have an awesome Bernese Dog, super loving and friendly. And as Alan would tell me, the area around the Lake is amazing. There is so much more to do and go see besides the bubbles, that you should really think about staying for a week and soaking it all in. The summertime I hear is just as spectacular as well! If you are not looking for a high end super fancy place with all the amenities, then Aurum Lodge is your place! Go there and detach from your devices, connect with people and nature, for what Alan and Madeline have built, Aurum lodge is that place to do it at! Thank you to both of you and I hope I can make it back!

Aurum Lodge is a marvel, and a super-comfortable eco-lodge nestled in the evergreens along the north shore of Abraham Lake, on Highway 11 about 45 km. west of Noedegg AB. And by, eco, I do mean ECO! Totally self-sufficient with its own well, solar power, propane boiler, and systems and back-up systems, it is completely designed and built to very high and strict green standards, and is extremely comfortable and cozy. Owners/operators Madelaine and Alan are friendly, accommodating, and the master-minds behind the design, comstruction, operation, and sustaining of the Aurum Lodge. The lodge is very well built and detailed. Don't come if you want television, shopping. DO come for relaxation, photography, outdoors, scenery, hiking, nature. Highly recomended for a short or long stay! Or anywhere in between.
