Designing and delivering training to the committee members of The Pan Disability Connection (PDC) has been an enlightening and inspiring experience! PDC is formed by ten organizations in Edmonton who help their clients - persons with disabilities to find employment. Having learned about the challenges and barriers that PDC’s clients go through, Ada went out of my usual way of thinking and provided the members with a different perspective on coaching their clients and connecting with potential employers. This is the 6th time that Ada Tai was invited to speak at the Chinese Graduate Students Club event. This particular event - Networking for Job Search, was very well organized, and provided a great platform for students to mingle with industry professionals. The event also featured Dr. Margaret-Ann Armour's presentation.
Networking is an essential business skill. It should not only start on the day you need a job, and it should not end on the day you get a job. Networking starts with your existing network, then expands from there. A few tips that Ada shared with the students: have the basic business etiquette, and be strategic and persistent.

Last week Ada Tai, on behalf of BadaB Consulting, was invited by CPHR AB to speak to the HR members in central Alberta. The event was very well organized, and the members were so eager and friendly.
The title of Ada's presentation was "Gen HR doing HR for Gen Ys". She encouraged managers and HR practitioners not to approach the issues of the younger workforce using the traditional practices, but rather using a Gen Y lens to better attract, motivate and engage these workers. Let's not forget, by 2020, 50% of the workforce will be occupied by Gen Ys.

We often hear about the "business justification" for succession planning, such as continuous supplying of qualified people to fill critical roles, aligning between organization's vision and its Human Resources plan, commitment to developing employees, etc. However, why have many organizations still not started succession planning?
During Ada's "Succession Planning" presentation in Lethbridge, she talked about successful and unsuccessful organizational examples. She also shared tools and tips for a company to start its succession plan. To sum up, succession planning is not to be a one-time, short term deal. It should be part of the overall workforce business plan.

Ada Tai was invited again by CPHR AB to speak on Career Planning this week. HR professionals are required to be technically strong, understand the business, represent the business interest but can relate to the front-line workers, support and be the pioneer of organizational changes (even though those changes may affect their positions), keep up with the legislation and economy changes, manage well the diversity in the workforce, firefight in urgent situations, and execute the day-to-day activities... When do they have time to plan and grow their own career? Systematic career planning takes time, effort, reflection and communication with others. Ada shared the five steps of career planning and left questions for the attendees to think about their own situations.

What does "diversity inclusion"make you think? The Canadian workforce is becoming more and more diverse. In 2016, every 1 of 5 Canadian residents are visible minorities. In 2031, every 1 of 3 residents will be visible minorities. This week, Ada Tai, on behalf of BadaB Consulting, was invited by Shift Management, Spruce Grove Chamber of Commerce and Acheson Business Association to speak on "Diversity Inclusion". Ada did not encourage businesses to look at diversity inclusion a...s a "nice thing to do", and "we will do it when we have time". Diversity inclusion is about properly managing your employees, so the businesses can effectively attract, retain and motivate workers.
