Every summer, opera comes alive in Banff with a tradition that started right here in the Rockies—pints, operatic arias and ensembles, and Canada's established and emerging opera singers. It's called #OperaPub and it never fails to amaze and entertain a full house over several Friday nights at the Banff Legion.
Enjoy a peek into this unforgettable event with our latest Open Studio feature.

One of the most photographed spots found just outside our mountain town is Vermillion Lakes. This #thenandnow photo captures a Banff School of Fine Arts participant painting this iconic spot back in 1947.
Not much has changed in the backdrop, other than taller trees and the installation of several docks now in place for visitors to further take in the views. 📷: Jessica TheWitt

In July of 1985, history was made at Banff Centre with 'The Princess of the Stars', an opera production that was performed completely on water for over 3,000 people at Two Jack Lake.
Putting on such a performance came with a unique set of challenges, including worrying for the safety of the performers. Dancers, who wore bird-like costumes with large wingspans, feared falling into Two Jack Lake with their heavy attire. As a matter of precaution, the cast completed trial runs in our Sally Borden swimming pool to see if the dancers could jump back into their canoes if they fell into the water.
In this #thenandnow feature, we find the character "Dawn Bird" gliding across the pool. Luckily, these rehearsals proved successful, as nobody went overboard during the actual performance.

The staff are all helpful and willingness to participate in my Laughter Program was high. Thanks to Sarah, Charlene and Allanah!!!

User

Maybe the best place I have ever stayed everything here isn't just good, its GREAT!

User

It doesn't get better than the mountain air amongst creative and thoughtful thinkers. The Lloyd Hall, although under constructions, was wonderful, and convenient to stay at. We love what you are doing with the place :)

User

I'm from the US. I had come to be apart of the Patty Crane workshop. I had no idea what to expect and was not only blown away but impacted emotionally to my core by the people the staff and the beauty.. thank you from the bottom of my heart..

User

I love the Banff Centre Residency for many reasons. There is never a dull moment, I learn a lot, meet wonderful people, get work done that I couldn't do in my own studio, and listen to great music and lectures. The view is pretty good as well.

User

I had one of the best residencies of my life just now at Banff Centre. Amazing and thought - provoking atmosphere, friendly, gorgeously renovated rooms in Lloyd, talented colleagues from across a range of fields and disciplines... and great gym too! I am so grateful to have been able to spend two weeks here.

User

Great venue for catching legends like Blue Rodeo in an intimate setting nestled in the mountains of Banff.

User

Been here about 40 years ago; then 20 years & today, what a difference!

I saw where the author of the book “life of Pi” created his story here.

Walked around breathing the mountain air & had a good nights sleep here.

It’s fabulous!

User

Banff is simply an amazing, picturesque and artistic place. The Centre is phenomenal and such an awesome campus - we had a purely great time, the accommodation was superb, the food delicious and the service top-top! Many thanks and much appreciation, for South Africa!

User

We stopped in after a hike up Tunnel Mountain, just on the spur of the moment, as we had never been there before. We were promptly invited to an improv performance that was starting in a few minutes. We decided to attend and thoroughly enjoyed it! An extra bonus was that they served us free drinks to enjoy during the performance😊. We ended our evening with dinner on a gorgeous patio at Maclab Bistro. Food was good.

Everything is excellent, with the exception of two problems I encountered on my last visit there.

1. The beautiful dining hall is very expensive and has an exclusive area for those who are having an even more amazing meal. This shows an elitism that has crept in to this old facility that was begun and led for many, many years for all people who like or are creative and artistic. the original purpose also emphasized rural Albertans who have less access to the arts and to their own development of their artistic talents and interests than do, and did, urban people.

2. The residence that we stayed in was done without air conditioning of the electric way, which I am pleased with. But there was no adequate natural replacement, such fans that are strong enough and available enough, and as windows with a large enough opening for breezes to enter. Also the walls of the rooms allowed every nearby sound to almost be amplified. The rooms were small, which is fine, but with the other problems they were oppressive. When we complained, we were told haughtily that these rooms were built to high standards. This reply by the Banff Centre's staff is simply not true.

User

Clean, affordable, and well maintained facility. Friendly staff. Free coffee, teas and flavoured water. Went on peak season so the pool and activity room are lil bit overcrowded. Room is too warm at night in summer but each room has a fan so it kinda help. Very near the town centre and other spots, just walking distance yet the area has a "forest feel" so really a good place.

User

Ravens overly complicated cuisine without proper show best glassware.

Front desk staff often ignorant of how to deliver room service menue or TV channel sélection.

Very competent massage staff.

User

It's ok, not a five star hotel and unable to compare to other local hotels as we are not sure what they off as a high traffic hotel in Banff. Not much privacy in rooms as someone can look in your room from off the road unless you close the blinds and turn on the lights otherwise in the dark.

User

I think banff Centre is doing a great work to artists worldwide and I have liked the organization and I need to collaborate with banff centre. Am from from Uganda in east Africa. Am anstrumentalist a percussionist or drummer,a music teacher and a folklore singer. I do cultural music and dances and then fusion music as well. Otherwise thanks for the great work and I hope one day to collaborate with you if you get my messages.

User

checked out early; happy to be at centre for conference and work... but basically mountain-resort holiday inn with lots of young people. . .knocking on my doors every night. . .a bit like a residence hall.

User

The atmosphere itself is very inspiring most staff are helpful and friendly some more so than others . But I have had housekeeping issues from day one with leave garbage in garbage can in middle of room, leaving leftover food siting in counter, not replenishing toiletry items in washroom nor condiments for coffee! Haphazardly putting towel on counter!!! I surely hope it applied across the board this poor service and not a race issue???

User

I would talk about all the racist/elitist moments I’ve experienced by BANFF security, McLab waiters, front desk management and conference attendees — but I’ll just say overall my time here hasn’t been the inspiring, creative atmosphere I was promised.

Context: I’m still at BANFF and I’m literally the *only* Black-american male attending this institution as a resident artist. It’s probably why these racial micro-aggressions I’m experiencing are so salient.

User

Was looking for the highlight thrilling outdoor activities videos like last year that I was totally looking forward to (Radical Reels segment). This year they didn't deliver :(. They choose not to do the Radical Reels thing and that ruined BANFF for me. After that I don't see why I would go back unless they bring back a "best of the best thrilling exciting outdoor videos day".

Why would I want to watch somebody walk across a slackline No weather to make it sketchy. Everything just worked out in their favor. No unique stunts or even normal tricks. That's pretty much what this year was the last day of tour that I went, with the exception of 1 or 2 decent videos.
