What is a 'Mala'?
Also known as Buddhist Beads, Malas were traditionally used in prayer and meditation. They dateack to the 8th Century BCE, originating in India.
Traditionally, Malas were made of wood - usually sandalwood or rudraksha seeds. In modern times, gemstones are usually added for specific healing qualities or attributes. This also makes them unique fashion pieces, on and off of your mat.
... Each Mala consists of 108 counting beads, 4 marker beads, one Guru, and a tassel.
- The marker beads are placed every 27 beads, and are used as a sensory cue to refocus your meditation or practice. - The Guru bead is traditionally a matching wood bead, although more modern Malas use either a gemstone, shell, or other type of pendant. It is said to represent the student-guru relationship, and acts as a start and end point for meditation. It is believed to be disrespectful to cross the Guru, and if you wish to continue your meditation past 108 counts, you turn your Mala and count in the opposite direction. - The tassel holds your prayers and intentions. It represents enlightenment, and oneness with the Divine. It is also believed to symbolize our prana and consciousness.
Why 108?
The number 108 has many significant meanings, and is open to interpretation. Some reasons include: - there are 108 stages on the journey of the human soul - there are 108 energy lines connecting to the heart - there are 54 letters in the Saksrit alphabet, and each letter has a feminine and masculine form, totaling 108
Modern Malas have a slightly different twist. Many don't include markers, and tassel free Malas provide an easier every day wear.
In the end, it is about finding (or creating) a piece that represents something to you - either by the stones that make it or the intentions that are set in it.
There really is no right or wrong! 📿
