What is fascia?
Fascia refers to the connective tissue that surrounds muscles, bones and joints. It provides support and protection and gives structure to the body.

What is Fascial Stretch Therapy?
Fascial Stretch Therapy (FST) was developed by Ann and Chris Frederick. FST is assisted stretching technique that takes place on a treatment table, comfortable straps are used to stabilize the limb or part of the body that is not being worked on, thus facilitating complete relaxation of the person being stretched and enhancing the effectiveness of the actions of the therapist. This technique uses a modified proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF) technique. In contrast to traditional PNF, clients using the FST system isometrically contract their muscles with as little as 5 percent of their strength and up to 50 percent (versus 100% ) and hold the contraction until they feel the release, approximately 3 to 4 seconds (versus 6 to 10 seconds), for a more effective relaxation response. Traction is used to assess the range of motion (ROM) in the tissue before the stretching begins. Traction is also gently used throughout the stretching. Pain is never allowed and considered a negative response. The Therapist and client move together like a dance, with perpetual undulating movements through the session.

How is FST (Fasical Stretch Therapy) different then Myofascial Release?
Myofascial release often involves manipulation of the tissue but not traction. FST is an alternative to MFR that has been found to be very effective and less painful. In MFR stretching, one is trained to hold the stretch to the first level of resistance and allow the limb to "unwind. " This can involve holding the leg or arm for quite a length of time. In FST, we stretch THROUGH the joint, and then using PNF to neurologically reprogram the golgi tendon organs to the more relaxed /longer length. In basic terms, Myofascial release works more locally and FST is more global.

What makes FST different from other forms of stretching?
Among other things the most distinct difference is that FST uses Fascial Traction. Fascial Traction gets the joint capsule open by decompressing the joint and eliminates the jamming of joint while stretching. It creates optimal mobility of the joint capsule that dramatically helps the effectiveness of ROM increases and flexibility gains. This specific type of manual traction releases adhesions in the joint capsules and other connective tissues. It increases the level of relaxation through joint mechano-receptors, called reflexive relaxation of the muscles that share the same innervation source and cross on or near the joint. It increases the good endorphins into the blood stream as well as significantly reducing pain levels during the stretching. Traction allows for maximal lengthening of all the connective tissues as it targets all fascial components from deep inside joint capsule, ligaments, tendons and muscle tissues and all the connective tissue throughout the body.

Is FST painful?
Not at all! The number 1 rule of FST is that there is no pain.
