Bird/Land Ecosystem Management

About Bird/Land Ecosystem Management

Bird /Land Ecosystem Management does contract work on the management of landscapes and forests based on emulation of natural and historic disturbance events. The company was founded in Prince George, B. C. Canada with study of the impacts and frequency of wildfires in forested landscapes of northern sub-boreal forests. Subsequently, the company extended their work to the tropical realm, with study of lowland dipterocarp rainforests of SE Asia. We specialize in the distribution patterns of birds, particularly cavity nesters, in relation to natural forest disturbance. We maintain that sustainable management of the resource potential of temperate and tropical forests is optimized through consideration of the ecosystem services provided by forests. Bird /Land Ecosystem Management also conducts work on sustainable use of energy and the basis for global anthropogenic greenhouse gas emissions. More than 80% of the recent rise of atmospheric greenhouse gases is due to anthropogenic emissions from combustion of fossil fuels; less than 20% to land use changes that remove growing forests and their capacity to sequester carbon from the atmosphere. We are dedicated to the global task of conserving energy in our urban communities through wiser use of energy for transportation, electricity, space heating and air-conditioning; and consuming excess carbon in the atmosphere through worldwide reforestation. These are the primary steps that must be taken in a timely manner if we are to avoid getting ourselves into one of the large-scale warming events that are known to have destabilized previous biospheres in the geologic past.
