In one shift, emergency personnel may witness more trauma, loss, destruction and death than the average citizen will see in a lifetime. It is estimated that 25 to 30 percent of police officers have stress-based physical health problems and 40 percent suffer from sleep disorders. The numbers are rising for post-traumatic stress and complex trauma disorders among all emergency personnel. (source www.yogaforfirstresponders.org)
In February of 2017, Constable Shanda Horan noticed... a decline in the mental health of her peers due to burnout, compassion fatigue, depression and anxiety.She recognized that some of them had unhealthy coping skills and that suicide was a very real threat.
As a former personal trainer with a diploma in fitness and nutrition, she began to explore first-responder targeted yoga. She found there were very few programs designed specifically for first responders that were culturally appropriate and trauma informed. She became a yoga teacher and took additional training in Denver, Colorado, becoming an Ambassador for Yoga for First Responders (YFFR).
Incorporating her own personal experiences and knowledge as a police officer, she then modified the class to be culturally specific to support the resiliency of frontline officers. They might not be able to control what goes on around them, but they can control how they react to it. Constable Horan included tactical breathing and focused on areas where first responders are often affected by things such as duty belts, shift work and stress stored in tissues.
Constable Horan began offering the Thin Blue Line Yoga program for free at the CPA headquarters and fundraised all of the money required to support the materials and tools needed for the program. She also broadened her locations to increase accessibility by offering the program at a CrossFit gym in south Calgary.
Constable Horan continues to advocate for the mental health of first responders and seeks new ways to make Thin Blue Line Yoga more accessible to members. For her exemplary efforts to seek a positive approach to address mental health wellness within the workplace, Constable Shanda Horan is recognized with the Award of Excellence.
