Thank you to all the little superheros, princesses, pirates, furry animals, and parents who came out on Saturday to explore the amazing world of "Decomposers" at our Annual Halloween Program. We hope you had as much fun as we did!

We knew bats were amazing, but who knew that they had sparkly poop?! Check out this citizen science project with the Alberta Community Bat Program.

We always have lots of fun activities planned for families at our Halloween event, but we are looking for a little extra help this year. Our educators have just too much fun planned! If you would like to volunteer to help with a craft or activity, please call us at 780-849-8240. We would love to see you and we promise you a really fun day.

Recaptures by other banding stations are very rare, but we are excited to report that a Female Northern Saw-whet owl banded back in 2016 was recaptured this week at the Rocky Point Bird Observatory in Victoria, BC. This is our 8th NSWO foreign recovery and the only recovery from across the Rockies. We also have 2 from Montana, 2 from Saskatchewan, and 3 from Alberta (near Calgary, Bragg Creek, and Grimshaw). Thanks to Rocky Point Bird Observatory for sharing the pictures of this special owl.

We are lucky to have really amazing staff at the Lesser Lake Bird Observatory and the Boreal Centre for Bird Conservation. But unfortunately for us, it is time for some of them to head off to seek new adventures.
After many years with the LSLBO, two of our favourite staff members RICHARD KRIKUN (Bander in charge for 15 years) and NICOLE KRIKUN (Assistant Bander/owl bander for 10 years) will be departing Slave Lake to see what life brings them in the big city. As well, MICHELL...E MACMILLAN (our Boreal Educator for 3 1/2 years) will be heading back to Ontario to be closer to her family. You have all been a key part of the LSLBO and Boreal Centre over the years, We will miss you, but we are really excited for you as well.
We will be holding a GOING AWAY PARTY for them on Friday evening, Oct 12, 2018. For information on the event, or to send Rich, Nicole or Michelle your farewell messages, you can email info@lslbo.org or call us at 780-849-8240.

After an absurdly slow start to the owl season - only 6 banded in the first two weeks, our totals are now above our average! This was the season's 100th owl banded last night

User

We weren't able to get the nets open yesterday or today, so the last bird banded for the 2018 season was this gorgeous Harris sparrow banded on Friday!

User

Caught a barred owl last night!! This is the fifth time a barred owl has been captured, but it is not the fifth one banded. It was already banded and it turns out we originally banded it as an 'after second year' way back in 2009.
