TARIQ (Tangible Artistry Requires Intellectual Qualities) is a multi-genre DJ and MC project from 22 year old Edmontonian, Tariq Bakir. It is kept simple, to his name, as it is an expression of the spectrum of sounds and cultures that have influenced him over the years. With a background in hip-hop Tariq started his journey into music through freestyle competitions, and writing rhymes. While he was always interested in electronic music it wasn't until exposure to the live sce...ne and festival circuit where Tariq fell in love. Putting the rapping aside for a period Tariq began honing his skills on the decks playing house amd techno at various clubs, and opening for international artists around the city. In 2017 Tariq found a new love of Drum & Bass, Jungle, and West Coast bass at his first shambhala and astral harvest. He had found a home in a music that had the productions and energy he loved, but a culture that was reminiscent of his hip hop background. Currently, Tariq is an MC with the yegdnb & future roots crew, and continues to play on the decks, as well as combining the two for a unique live performance. He is also busy writing raps and working with talented producers in the city creating a library of music to be released. His DJ background allows him to read the crowd, let tracks breath, and seamlessly weave in and out of the mix when he is on the mic. Tariq is a young artist with a fresh mindset, but a hungry and continuously evolving student. His humble nature and respect for the cultural foundations of the music he dabbles into provides an old school meets new school approach that paves his way in the journey of music

Borealis 2018 Talent Spotlight: Edmonton DJ Oddbear is as stylistically diverse as they come. Born Cole Panchyshyn, he started DJing in March of 2015, and one month later founded one of Edmonton’s most prolific and beloved events groups, Acid Church. His personal style has varied as much as the shows he promotes, ranging from house and electro to trap and bass music, while maintaining a consistently infectious energy that is all his own. In March of 2018, he joined the roster of local heavyweights United Bass Kollective, bringing his sound to a wider audience. @oddbear_qt

Borealis 2018 Talent Spotlight: Lucus is known around the scene for his bright smile, exuberant fist pumping, his whiskey, and can/will be found where ever the house music is playing the loudest. When it comes to his tunes, he's versatile. He'll bang it out in a club but, well, the guy is a sunrise specialist. Taking the golden-hour lovers on a journey through the misty morning is a true privilege, and Lucus doesn't take the opportunity lightly. Always bringing a memorable selection and a twinkle in his eye, Lucus is sure to bring the heat for the cool morning. @lucus.nv

Borealis 2018 Talent Spotlight: He’s loud, he’s proud, always wins the crowd. Sonny Chiba's unique fusion of acid house, techno and Italo disco have consummated in a sound that is completely his own. You can always feel the intensity and passion for music when you’re in the same room as this man, for his love of having a good time is infectious. He is always on the pulse in his hometown of Calgary Alberta whether it be manning his acid house collective Street Level or residen...cy nights and appearances at Calgary's infamous HiFI Club and Habitat Living Sound. We’re not sure if there’s anything more important in the world than the pursuit of happiness and the sharing thereof with Sonny Chiba… You could say he’s on a relentless pursuit when it comes to ensuring you have a good time. And much like his bad-ass, japanese martial arts movie-god namesake, he delivers. @sonnyfreele
