Calgary New Beginnings Counselling Services Description

Bonny J. Peng
M. Ed. , Registered Psychologist (Provisional)
Canadian Certified Counselor (C. C. C. )
Health Canada Approved Counselor

I have been counseling for 18 years, and was a university instructor for 14 years. Other than teaching, I work with individuals, groups, couples and families. I am a Registered Provisional Psychologist specializing in counselling, a Canadian Certified Counselor and an approved counselor for Health Canada, First Nations and Inuit Health Program.

I am using a variety of therapeutic approaches, but in recent years I am particularly interested in Self-Regulation Therapy (SRT). SRT is a neuro-psychophysiological based psychotherapy. It addresses dysregulation in the brain and nervous system and is grounded both in theory and practice in the newest developmental, neurobiological, and psychophysiological research.

SRT is a very effective approach in treating Mood Disorders, Anxiety Disorders including Panic Disorders and various form of phobias, Trauma and Stressor-Related Disorders such as PTSD, Psychotic Disorders, Substance Use Disorders, Chronic Pain, Chronic Fatigue and other trauma related symptoms such as hyper-vigilance, exaggerated startle response, panic attacks, rage, insomnia, disassociation, numbness, allergies, migraines, fibromyalgia, etc.

I have worked with clients from diverse backgrounds and have a particular passion for minority advocacy and working with survivors of various forms of trauma and abuse.

I believe that counselling is a process of working through healing, forgiveness and regaining a sense of well-being and control in one's life. The counselor's role is to facilitate this process and empower clients to reach this goal.
