Calgary Region Airshed Zone Description

There are many factors that contribute to the air quality in Calgary and area. Industry emissions from storage tanks and oil and gas wells. Municipality emissions from constructions zones and public transit. And, finally, the residential emissions: home heating, wood burning fires, even cleaning products.

An issue that is becoming increasingly problematic to residents is the emissions from transportation. The pollutants from vehicles during rush hour (morning and night), long commutes, and drive thru and school zone idling are taking a huge toll on the air quality.

It is estimated that 400 deaths /year in Calgary result from acute and chronic exposure. The effects of poor air quality on the public result in health symptoms, physician and hospital visits and negatively impact on the quality of life.

It isn't too late! Together with CRAZ, you could help improve the air quality in Calgary and the region. It can be as simple as taking the C-train to work every other day; going into the restaurant instead of idling in a drive-thru; walking to near-by businesses instead of driving. The possibilities are ENDLESS!
