WINNER VIDEO: The judges heard Ryan Konynenbelt’s sales pitch loud and clear at the Calgary Stampede’s International Livestock Auctioneer Championship on Saturday, placing the 21-year-old competitor in the top spot.
The former Rookie of the Year topped a field of 36 competitors from as far afield as Australia and South Africa at the event held in the Nutrien Western Event Centre.
“I think my strength in terms of bid calling is clarity. I like to be clear,” said Konynenbelt, w...ho is from Nobleford, Alberta. “I sell at auctions in front of guys who listen to auctioneers all day and in front of people who only hear an auctioneer once a year, so my goal is to be as clear as I can be.”
Konynenbelt, who works at Southern Alberta Livestock Exchange in Fort Macleod, started his career at the age of 16, selling items in a church fundraiser. The Champion win earned him $10,000 and a Stampede belt buckle. It also came with a buy into next year’s World Livestock Auctioneer Championship in Visalia, California, where he’s sure to employ some of the knowledge he gained at the International Livestock Auctioneer Championship.

WINNING RUN: The Calgary Stampede Heavy Horse Pull is a show so nice, Melvin Yoder had to enter it twice.
And the strategy paid off for the teamster from Mondovi, Wisconsin, as one of his two teams in the Heavy Weight division topped the leaderboard on Sunday night with a full pull of 14 feet at 12,500 pounds.
“It’s tough for us, because we don’t have the tight tug. You can tell with my horses that it takes them awhile to get used to it,” said the 45-year-old farmer and furniture maker who drove the team of Chester and Duke to the Champion title. “Mainly I bit them down. This morning, Duke was pretty hot, so I spent about three hours driving him around to get him tired.”

WINNING RUN: Veteran competitor Randy Dodge topped the field in Saturday’s Middle Weight division at 10,500 lb. in the ninth round. The teamster from Albany, Oregon co-owns the team of Simon and Tommy Boy with Airdrie’s Stan Grad. House extended his winning streak by landing the Reserve Champion spot with a 107-in. pull.

WINNING RUN: In the Light Weight division, held Friday, Travis House drove his own team into the Champion spot with nine full pulls, topping out at 10,000 lb. House, of Wheatland, N.D., placed fourth in the same division at last year’s Stampede. Reserve Champion went to Paul Geray, also teamstering his own horses, for a 43-inch pull at the same weight.
