Patients often ask us about using charcoal products to whiten teeth. Our hygienist suggest that it’s not to be used to scrub teeth or in a toothpaste. It is an abrasive substance that can wear down the enamel on your teeth. Over time, this can actually cause your teeth to become more yellow in colour rather than whiten them!
This oral rinse is a great alternative. You just swish it around and spit it out, so the surface of your tooth is not affected in the same way. This @mymagicmud product also contains Xylitol, which has been proven to have a remineralizing effect on our teeth! Having sensitive teeth can stop us from enjoying cold or hot foods and beverages. There could be an issue with your teeth that needs attention if you are feeling sensitivity. For example, acid erosion can cause the enamel to wear down, exposing the sensitive under layer of your tooth. Sensitivity is not a symptom to be ignored, as it can point towards a much larger problem with your oral health.
Always be sure to report sensitive areas to you dental hygienist and dentist at the beginning of you appointment. We will work with you to try to find ways to improve your oral health so you can enjoy ice cream again without cringing!

If you’re flossing regularly, and still find that you’re having some issues with bad breath, consider adding the use of a tongue scraper into you daily oral health routine!
Tongue scrapers work like a squeegee to scrape all the bacteria and build up from the surface of your tongue. Your tongue is made up of a bunch of little bumps that bacteria and food particles can easily hide in between, so don’t forget to clean it too!
This The Dirt tongue scraper is made from anti-microbial copper. We sell these at our clinic, so ask your hygienist next time your in! They can show you how to use it to get the best results too!

Whenever a new patient sits down in the chair at our clinic, we always start off with a one-on-one session about the science behind brushing and flossing. We want to make sure we can create a treatment plan that will work for YOU, so this is also a time to talk about your needs and sensibilities before we even get into your mouth. Every smile is unique, so we don’t do “one-size-fits-all”. We do however offer a free laser whitening to finish off your appointment with any regular dental hygiene cleaning and checkup (Karma excluded)! 🥳

The use of plastic has become an increasingly bigger problem in our society. Ideally, you should be changing your toothbrush every 3-4 months. That creates a lot of waste over time when using regular plastic toothbrushes! There's so many little ways we can reduce our use of plastic products - like using biodegradable bamboo toothbrushes instead of regular plastic ones.
We have these toothbrushes available for purchase at our clinic! Just take one, or get a pack of 4 to last you the year.

We all love our coffee and tea! A little tip: adding a bit of milk or dairy alternative can help reduce the risk of staining! Coffee and tea can be acidic, which erodes our enamel. If you can, brush your teeth for two minutes with a remineralizing toothpaste before you drink your beverage. This helps strengthen the enamel and protect it from acid attack.
Staying hydrated is always going to help your oral health! Coffee and tea can dehydrate you, so be sure to drink water after you enjoy your cozy beverage ☕️.

You've probably seen activated charcoal products on the shelves at your local grocery or drug store. What's the deal with them?
#WelcomeToLacesBathroom, where she disucsses the pros and cons of using activated charcoal products for oral health. The science behind activated charcoal fairly clear, but as you'll learn in this video, scrubbing your teeth with it may have negative effect in the long term!

Be careful if you are ingesting any activated charcoal while on medications. While activated charcoal absorbs a lot of bad stuff, it doesn't discriminate and could also absorb your medications. As a result, they may not be as effective. This rinse shouldn't be swallowed, but there is a chance of it happening so use with caution!

We LOVE this herbal oral spray by Gaia Herbs, and often recommend it to our patients. It works to stimulate saliva production, which helps for those who have a chronically dry mouth. There are many things that result in a dry mouth, from sleeping with the mouth open, to medications, to smoking marijuana or tobacco products.
Saliva fights the bacteria that causes bad breath and result in tooth decay. Low saliva production means that bacteria can thrive, which results in erosion of the enamel. Good saliva flow is crucial to keeping your enamel healthy and strong.

I hadn't been to the dentist in years, partially due to cost and then the longer I went without going the scarier it was! My first contact with Citizen dental was Catherine. She was personable, helpful, friendly and just made me feel like this was the place for me. She even made friends and joked around with my dad (who by the way is 75 and the king of dad jokes, so Catherine deserves some kind of award just for that!). Lace was so professional, and I can relate to her, it made a huge difference and made me so much more comfortable. I work in costumer service so all I can say is having a wicked receptionist in Catherine and then rad hygienists like Lace makes the experience so much easier! Both Lace and the dentist explained exactly what they were doing while they were doing it and it really helped ease my nerves. Now my teeth are stronger and whiter! I've already referred 4 people!

We booked with Mackenzie & she was fantastic , my kids loved it and can’t wait to go back . Pricing is also amazing and I don’t have coverage so I was really excited to find such a great place that’s adorable !

Holly, I believe her name was, made me feel at ease, and although it was an uncomfortable procedure, she really took her time and helped me through the discomfort. She was very informative about what was going on with my teeth, and was very helpful in explaining additional preventative measures. I am very grateful I found this place and would recommend to anyone who is afraid to go to the dentist.

I am always nervous to go in to have my teeth examined or cleaned due to negative past experiences, but the team at CDH made me feel comfortable immediately. In the past I've often felt judged because of not going in for a few years (whether due to budget or because I've never loved my dentists) but I never felt that once at Citizen... it was a breathe of fresh air. Their rates are reasonable and affordable comparatively and the service and team are top notch. Everyone is very friendly and welcoming. I am never changing offices again! And the free whitening treatment with the cleaning was such a great bonus to really cap of an already positive experience!

Absolutely great with kids. They are kind and easy for all ages to understand, not at all judgemental.
