Cold Lake Eyecare Description

Office History

Dr. Ross Campbell, a graduate of the University of Waterloo, School of Optometry, moved to Cold Lake and began practicing in 1979. He purchased the practice from Dr. Ken Armstrong and Dr. Len Bistritz. It was operated as a satellite office out of Edmonton. These doctors came to Cold Lake approximately once a month when there were enough patients booked. Dr. Campbell’s first office, Grand Centre Optometric, was located over the “Bordeleau Building” which was across from the CIBC Bank, adjacent to the Kathryn Drake Building. In April, 1985 he was joined as a co-owner by his former classmate, Dr. Al Edwards, and together they opened their new office at the present location. The new facility allowed for the development of an optical finishing laboratory and a larger state of the art frame room. Dr. Campbell has served on the Alberta Association of Optometrists’ Council in various positions, including President. He is also been very active in the community, serving with many sports groups as coach, advisor and on many boards. Dr. Edwards has been active with the Cold Lake Sailing Club and is involved with the Marina Users Group. In addition to sailing, he is an active biker, skier, and squash player.

The office was given a face lift in 2006. At that time, the frame room was renovated, new carpet laid, walls painted, and new furnishings were purchased. Since the community of Grand Centre had amalgamated with Cold Lake and renovations had been completed, the new name of “Cold Lake EyeCare” was adopted. Up-to-date has been the cornerstone of Cold Lake EyeCare. The office was the first optometric practice in Alberta to submit Alberta Health Care Claims directly via the internet to Alberta Health. We have state of the art equipment such as a retinal fundus camera, auto refractor, Humphrey’s Visual Field machine, and our newest piece of equipment, a Zeiss Cirrus HD Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT).

Dr. John Barkley moved to Cold Lake and started working in August 2009. In September 2009, Dr. Tran Nguyen also entered the practice. At the same time, Dr. Edwards retired from active practice. Dr. Barkley and Dr. Nguyen are both graduates of the Nova Southeastern University College of Optometry in Florida, class of 2009.

In January 2011, Dr. Edwards retired and Dr. Barkley assumed his portion of the business.
