Companion Animal Outreach Society Description

Our Story, Adoption Program and Our Mission

ANIMAL RESCUE SERVICES

Thousands of cats and dogs are homeless, abandoned, abused or living in horrible conditions. Companion Animal Outreach Society strives to make a difference in communities by providing an animal shelter located inside Red Deer. We provide a safe haven for stray, rescued, abandoned and surrendered animals. Companion Animal Outreach Society dedicated staff and volunteers help animals in first nations communities where there is no animal services and we can provide rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming for these animals.
Companion Animal Outreach Society is committed to the on-going efforts to rescue animals in these areas. Collaboration is key to our success. We partner with various animal rescue organizations in Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba. With our partnerships we can help each other maximize the number of animals rescued and rehomed.
All animals we rescue and admit into our shelter are spayed or neutered prior to be putting up for adoption. We ensure all animals receive all necessary veterinary treatments such as vaccines, deworming, dental work, minor and major surgeries.
Adoption Program
Our Adoption Program is designed to maximize adoptions by providing multiple locations where people can adopt dogs, cats and rabbits. Companion Animal Rescue Society (formally known as Alberta Animal Services) partnered with Petland Canada in 2011 where we house our adoptable pets inside their stores. Over the years we have expanded and grown. In Red Deer, our adoption centre was built and donated by Petland Canada in 2013 where it has 12 dog runs and 12 cat runs and in 2018 Petland Built and donated our second adoption centre located inside the Sunridge Petland in Calgary. We have satellite adoption centres in Calgary, Airdrie, and Edmonton for cats and hope to bring dogs to these locations in the future. With our efforts and success and partnerships, we have adopted thousands of cats and dogs over the years.
Our Mission
“To provide a safe and loving atmosphere for rescued and lost animals by providing them with the utmost care with proper nutrition, access to veterinary care, spaying /neutering, vaccinations /deworming, rehabilitation and adoption. ”

DOG PARK ETIQUETTE Dog parks are one of those places that seem like a brilliant idea, and would be, if we all knew how to behave. But we don't. You can potentially ruin your dog by taking them to dog parks. A single situation gone wrong can escalate into an attack or fight, which can cause life-long reactivity or fear aggression in your dog. The reality is that dog parks are not the playground most people think they are. But they c...

ECLAMPSIA in CATS and DOGS -- MILK FEVER
Eclampsia is an emergency medical condition associated with a life threatening drop in blood calcium levels that occurs in nursing mothers. The lactating animal is especially susceptible to blood calcium depletion because of milk production. It can occur just before or up to five weeks after giving birth. Eclampsia occurs much less often in cats then in dogs. Signs can be terrifying to pet owners as they can exhibit lethargy, trembling..., weakness, faint pulse, collapse, seizures, and in untreated cases, death. Hyperthermia (increased body temperature) is a common finding, due to the heat generated by uncontrollable muscle trembling. It is a true medical emergency and you need to contact your vet immediately. Treatment involves immediate intravenous injections of calcium and other drugs. Intravenous calcium needs to be administered very carefully and slowly. Some cats/ dogs will require anti seizure drugs to control seizures and tetany. Oral calcium supplements and weaning the babies as quickly as possible are required for follow up care. If diagnosed and treated promptly, recovery is usually rapid and complete. Calcium supplementation or feeding cottage cheese in pregnant and nursing cats/dogs is not recommended. Excessive calcium intake during pregnancy or nursing can suppress parathyroid hormone production and actually increase the risk of developing low blood calcium levels or Eclampsia. All pregnant cats/dogs should be fed a high quality diet formulated for pregnant and nursing mothers, that is rich in essential vitamins and minerals. Supplementing the diet with omega 3 fatty acids like fish oil is recommended but will not help reduce the risk of Eclampsia. If you suspect Eclampsia is developing, prevent the babies from suckling and contact your veterinarian immediately. Clinical signs of Eclampsia become evident in cats when their total calcium levels drop below 7.0 mg/dL(0.04mmol/L), and 8.0mg/dL (0.45 mmol/L) in dogs. Credit to Ernest Ward, DVM

DOG MYTHS MYTH #1: Only Male Dogs Hump other Dogs. This behavior from females is an act of dominance and is perfectly normal. MYTH #2: Indoor Dogs Don’t Need Heartworm Prevention. Mosquitoes spread heartworms, so prevention is very important. An infected dog faces a long, expensive treatment process. MYTH #3: Giving Your Dog Leftovers is Okay....

Meet Marcee, one of our sweet foster mommas! Marcee is currently in care being the best mom to not only her kittens, but lots of others. Last week we got six kittens who didn't have their mom and this lovely lady gladly took them on. It was perfect timing because her babies were ready to stop nursing. Then two days ago a box of four kittens was found on the side of a road. Two are about one week old and two are about three weeks, no mom was found with them. This amazing momma cat is now raising these four as well! That's fourteen kittens including her own litter! She is an amazing cat. Thank you to her and our amazing foster homes for all the work they do for our animals. 💕🙌

CATS -- FACT or FICTION 1. Cats Always Land on Their Feet: FICTION. Cats are more apt to be injured from low heights then high because they don't have time to turn or twist their bodies into the correct position to land safely. 2. Females Should Have a Litter Before Spaying: FICTION. There is no benefit from this. It is encouraged to have them spayed, to control the overpopulation, which overcrowds shelters and puts individual cats at risk. 3. Cats Can't be Trained: FICTION.... Teaching your cat to do certain things can strengthen the bond between them and your family. 4. It's Okay for Cats to Have Some Chocolate: FICTION. Chocolate contains theobromine which is toxic to both dogs and cats. 5. Indoor Cats Can Get Diseases: FACT. The reality is that all cats can contract illnesses. Airborne germs, being brought in on your clothing or your dog are a couple of ways. 6. Cats Will Steal the Breathe of a Baby: FICTION. The basis of this myth is from cats liking to snuggle up against warm bodies. 7. Garlic on Your Cats Food Will Get Rid of Worms: FICTION. Garlic can cause anemia in cats and should be avoided. 8. Cats Shouldn’t Have Milk: FACT. It Causes diarrhea and obesity. 9. A Cat Without Whiskers Loses it's Balance: FICTION. Cats use them as feelers, not for balance. They can also tell you the mood of your cat. 10. Pregnant Women Have to Avoid Cats Due to Infection Known as Toxoplasmosis: FICTION. Toxoplasmosis is spread through feces and litter. Avoid the litter box and everything will be fine. 11. Table scraps are okay for my cat: FICTION. Table scraps are empty calories for cats. A piece of cheese for a 10 pound cat is like eating three chocolate bars. 12. Cats like water: FACT. While most cats hate baths, they find running water fascinating. They will often sit in the sink waiting for the water to be turned on. They also like sitting in the rain. 13. Cats are Nocturnal: FICTION. Cats are crepuscular. They are most active at dawn and dusk. The shape of their eyes allows them to see well in low light. 14. Cats are Loners: FICTION. Most cats like to live in a colony. 15. Cats only Purr when Happy: FICTION. While purring is heard at times of contentment, they also purr when in pain and while dying. Kittens can purr by the time they are 48 hours old. 16. Black Cats are Bad Luck: FICTION. There are nearly as many superstitions about them bringing good luck as bad. However asthma and immunology people with dark cats were 4 times more likely to suffer a moderate to severe allergy attack. Researchers speculate that darker cats produce more fel d 1 allergen in their skin and saliva.

Transformation Tuesday! Shelby was rescued in June and found with severe corneal damage in one eye leaving her partially blind and lots of lesions and scabs from past injuries. She was adopted a couple weeks ago and her new family sent us this great photo of her, she looks like a totally different dog!
"Shelby is doing really well! She loves going on long walks downtown where she can say hi to everyone on the street and we know some basic commands now!"
