Since the potential of the Athabasca Oil sands was discovered many decades ago, there has been an ever-increasing population of workers in the Fort McMurray and Northern Alberta regions requiring urgent, emergent, and ongoing medical care. This has placed a strain on the existing medical facilities and resources, and in turn, indigenous populations, advocacy groups, the government and regional healthcare authorities have placed pressure on industry to provide medical services for their employees in a desperate attempt to maintain a viable medical system.
