Since ancient times, people have been building bridges. A few of the different types of bridges that you may see are:
1. Beam Bridge - The bulk of this bridge is made of steel or prestressed concrete girders below, and concrete or pre-fabricated steel parts above. This is the kind of bridge is extremely common, and you've probably crossed one today!
2. Truss Bridge: This type of bridge is constructed by joining straight elements. They can be constructed from both steel and wo...od. This type of bridge was very popular in the USA from 1870 to 1930.
3. Arch Bridge: It derives its name from its simple shape. The oldest type of common bridge, an ancient example of this still exists in Greece today and dates back to 1300 BC (Arkadiko Bridge). The most common builder of these types of bridges were the Romans.
4. Suspension Bridge: A bridge that is secured by steel cables that are supported by towers at each end. Technically, the load of the bridge is transformed into the elasticity of the cables. Some of the most impressive suspension bridges include the United States Golden Gate Bridge, England's Humber Bridge and China's Tsing Ma Bridge.
5. Cable-stayed Bridge: While similar in structure to a suspension bridge, cable-stayed operate differently, with the main difference being the quantity of cable used. In a cable-stayed bridge, the support towers are quite a bit shorter and the bridge requires less cable to go from the deck to the tower.

Big girders means big cranes. Remembering back to a warmer time flying some 15m girders in to place for a rural bridge this past summer. This project went of without a hitch and looks fantastic now that it's done.
