Dinosaur Provincial Park Unesco World Heritage Site Description

Dinosaur Provincial Park, located 48 km NE of Brooks, Alberta, was established by the government of Alberta on June 27, 1955. In 1979 the Park was declared a World Heritage Site by the United Nations, Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (U. N. E. S. C. O. ). Three significant features were recognized for WHS status: 1. exceptional abundance and diversity of dinosaur and other vertebrate fossils, 2. largest and most spectacular badlands in Canada, 3. protection of unique riparian (riverside) habitat along the Red Deer River.
The Park is located 48 kilometres northeast of Brooks, Alberta (just 10 km from the hamlet of Patricia).

i cant wait to come back for the 3rd time and keep exploring the park, We have found nothing but adventure and fun times. the park is a special place.

User

awesome place to take your family.

User

Where to begin? The scenery is absolutely breathtaking. Much more than I expected. We’ve just completed a bone bed dig with Dave & it’s the coolest thing I’ve ever done on vacation. Dave was a great guide. Knowledgeable. Friendly. Helpful. Amazing experience

User

We really enjoyed the tour into the Natural Perserve. It is a incredibly beautiful and unique area. We enjoyed camping. The only downside was it is incredibly hot (one day was 39 degrees), next time I would visit in the Spring or Fall when the temperatures are lower.

User

Such an amazing place to get away to with the whole family! So much beauty and makes you fall in love with with Alberta all over again. Never seen this type of hidden gem and the visitor information was so helpful!

User

Simply amazing , not just the park and the surroundings, but the tour guides and staff. The knowledge and people skills they all showed and displayed made things that much more enjoyable. You need to almost visits again and again just to take it in, and I am sure each time will be different. Already planning a return trip.

One of the best experiences I have ever done. As a travel agent and adventurer at heart, I have had the opportunity to visit and experience some very unique places. The excavation program was hard work and worth every drop of sweat, we gained an appreciation for the work that paleontologists do and have amazing memories of cleaning and jacketing dino bones! It is just amazing what Canada has to offer. The entire program was very organized from start to finish, can't wait to do it again.

User

My family and I went on a bus tour this afternoon. It was really interesting. I had never seen landscape quite like that before. Definitely beautiful. I will definitely have to go back again some day while I am back up here visiting. My son even liked it. Next time we will have to do something else.

User

I’ve visited the park countless times over the years, and always discover something new. Our kids love the trails and amenities here, and we go hiking year round!

User

It was awesome i found ankylosaur ceritopsian bones awsome albertosaurus teeth hadrosaur footprints and seen cactus’s and cool wildlife and awesome views of the stunning badlands I really really want to come back

User

I preferred this over drumheller only because I took the tour into the restricted area. It was educational as I hadn't known the reason for the types of layers of sediment, the time periods we were looking at, the primary reasons why we are able to find so many (thousands) of bones and bone fragments in the ground. Tips: book your tour time earlier in the day (won't be as hot), take water with you, wear sum protection/hat, and it is also a great tour for kids (both big and small).

The campgrounds are ok - not overly private but are functional. The snack bar is pretty good too. Visitors center was informative although I skipped out going in because of the $6 entrance fee and because I'm really not into museums (go to Tyrrell for that!).

User

I love this park! I grew up only 10 minutes away from here and my family use to go down for a bbq every Sunday during the summer. I have so many fond memories of this place. I haven't been there now for years, and I hope to go back soon. This was home for me and a big part of my youth growing up. A thumbs up for every year dinosaurs have been extinct. Xoxox

User

I love Dinosaur Park!! We just got back from camping there for 5 days and we loved it!!! We had such a great time! Such a beautiful park!! We did the Fossil Safari and we had an awesome time!! We really enjoyed it! And we signed our son up for the Day Camp and he loved it!! An awesome place to go!! A must see!! An awesome place to go for a holiday!! :)

I have been telling people for DECADES this is the rarest gem in Canada. It has inspired me for many years as an artist (since a young student) and I am sure it will inspire you too. Bring your kids and all your family or come on your own. Either way, this place will drop an anchor in your heart that can't be moved- in a good way. The park staff are fantastic - tours are led by MA's in Paleontology or other degrees with a passion for this place and life in general. The Field Station exhibits are world class and feed the Royal Tyrell Museum. This is one of the rarest uncommercialized parks in the world. It will replenish your soul if you are open to it.

User

Great site! It is very family friendly for sure. Not your typical hiker's adventure park, but it was nice for an afternoon! One day spend there is enough if you're used to doing 5km of walking a day. There are 5 hiking trails and the longest one is 1.5km. It is spectacular and the views are like being in another world.

The regular camping sites come with a fire pit and grill with a pic nic table to sit at too. Bathroom facilities are close and there's drinking water and even wifi. It gets very crowded though, so be warned!

User

Great place to explore, walk, eat and relax. Dinosaur provincial park takes you to a prehistoric area to make you feel like you time traveled. Originally from Ontario, seeing this park made me fall in love with the badlands.

User

Dinosaur Provincial Park is one of Alberta’s little hidden treasures. The whole Red Deer River Valley (The Badlands) is a place everyone in Alberta needs to see but this section is particularly special!

User

Absolutely awesome place to visit!! Our family has been coming here for years and now we have begun bringing the next generations and significant others. A must see! It boggles the mind to see the bones that lay where they have fallen millions of years ago!

User
