MY FIRST CAR – A 2001 Chevy Impala LS 2.4 6cyl Dark Jade Green Metallic
In 2011, I started working for my very first dealership in Spruce Grove, AB. I was exactly 18. Newly single mother of two with tons of ambition to make it out in this big world. (Still do! .. Still am! ha)... I worked alongside and met some very great people during my time with them before my big move to Calgary. One of those people was a fellow colleague who worked with us part-time and worked as a pastor full-time. (Who woulda thought, right!?) He was heaven sent. A true pleasure to be around.
December 23, 2011, he knocked on my office door and made his way in introducing his client to me and me to his clients. I was unsure of why, but I respectively went along and introduced myself back.
“Stephanie, my clients here just bought a new Ford Ranger and they didn’t want to trade their vehicle in on the deal. Instead, they told me that they’d been waiting to gift it to a single mother when the time was right. I knew just the right person. If it’s okay with you, I told them a little bit about your story and asked them if I could introduce them to someone who I knew would be indefinitely grateful for something as generous and helpful to her. It’s my pleasure to bring you guys together today in this moment of genuine generosity and kindness. This is Mr. and Mrs. Holland.”
I picked up my very first car 3 days later, on boxing day. For $1.
With all the bells and whistles. It was so smooth. The whole process felt like a dream.
The impact this car had on me and my little family was tremendous. Till this day, my son still brings up the ‘Green car’
I drove that car for the following 3 years. Year 2, I hit a coyote on the highway and it did quite a bit of damage to my radiator and from there my head gasket blew. I continued driving it for a year, back and forth from Spruce Grove to Calgary with 2 4 liter jugs of water to cool it down whenever it over heated.
I was making the big move and I was so determined; nothing was going to stop me from achieving that, not even overheating car in the middle of snow storms on the highway! I held onto that car for as long as she could make it. The whole experience itself is something I’m internally grateful for having.
The story and the magic in having my first car has led me to so many places and experiences that could have otherwise taken me on a different course. Looking back today, a big piece of my heart rejoices.
Someday, I hope to return the favor with as much grace as the Holland’s had for me.
