Hey Drum Family! What is/are your favourite genres of music to play as a drummer? Do you play that style or genre often?
Have you seen and/or heard the amazing Brian Blade (Brady's brother) play? He is an incredibly talented jazz drummer. Besides working with his own Fellowship Band, Brian is a member of The Wayne Shorter quartet and recorded with music giants such as Daniel Lanois, Joni Mitchell, Ellis Marsalis, Marianne Faithfull, Emmylou Harris, Billy Childs, Herbie Hancock, Dorothy Scott and Bob Dylan. Check out Brian performing here for Canopus Drums!

Hey Drum Family! Please join me in remebering the amazing and influential Anthony Terrence "Tony" Thompson today. Tony was born on November 15, 1954 and was a super busy session drummer best known as the drummer of The Power Station and a member of the band Chic. Throughout his career Tony played with high profile artists like David Bowie, Elton John, Mick Jagger, Crown of Thorns and Distance to name a few. Sadly we lost Tony on November 12, 2003. Are you a fan of Tony's and/or do you have a favourite recording, perfromance or artist that he worked with? Here he is in a retrospective with the band The Power Station. Rest in peace Tony, thanks for the inspiration!

Hey Drum Family! Do you work on any specific hi hat techniques or approaches? Carter Beauford is a huge influence of mine and years ago his drumming inspired me to begin developing my open hand technique. Check out the amazing Mr. Beauford discussing some of his approaches in this clip from his awesome Under The Table And Drumming - Vol 1 DVD. Have you ever seen Carter play live in person? Amazing!!!

Hey Drummers! Do you spend an equal amount of time working on your foot speed, control and dynamics as you do on your hand technique? I am sure that drummers that regularly play double bass drum log in lots of time developing their feet. If you are primarily a single bass drum player, do you incorporate your less dominant foot into your playing regularly?
Check out this cool drum lick/exercise/lesson from my drum brother and pal, the amazing Dan Zalac demonstrating "The Upst...roke Kick Lick" John Bonham Technique. This is a great lick and and an awesome exercise if you want to work on getting all four limbs working together (Plus it is just straight up awesome!). If you dig it, add it to your weekend drumming plans!
Be sure to check out Dan's YouTube Channel for more killer drumming! https://www.youtube.com/user/GrooveDrummi n

Hey Drum Family! Here's one for you... What is your DREAM GIG? What band would you love to be in or what artist would you want to back up (Past or present)? I have a few on my list, David Bowie and Prince are up there and that definitely won't happen but that would have been pretty cool as far as I am concerned.
I also have a pretty heavy obsession with all things Steve Jordan. I saw this interview with him and I thought that other drummers would dig it too as I never met a ...drummer that didn't like Steve's incredible playing.
In this interview Steve talks about his dream gig and tells a cool story about how he got to play with one of his icons of music. I love learning more about the drummers that I admire, I feel like I can get a better handle on their drumming style and perpectives that way.
Check this out and be sure to share your DREAM GIG with us in the comments section! Enjoy...

Hey Drummers! So, do you ever hear this question being thrown around: Are you a GROOVE drummer or a CHOPS drummer? How do you respond? What???? Wait... how about we are ALL DRUMMERS!
Of course we all have our personal tastes, likes, style and genre interests as well as areas of focus in our drumming journey and they are all AWESOME! If someone is playing the drums, that is all the matters to me. What we personally like and appreciate from a drumming perspective means absolut...ely nothing to anyone else but us. Right?
I am constantly inspired and blown away by drummers, especially drummers that don't approach playing like I do because they inspire me and motivate me to try new things and I just might learn something in the process. We can appreciate every drummer for their talent, skills, abilities and approach without the need to judge, label or put a value on their playing.
Speaking of appreciating drummers, have you seen or heard Devon Taylor (currently drumming with Rita Ora)? Devon is incredible and I personally feel like he does an amazing job of covering all the bases of drumming. He has an awesome personal style, tons of energy, originality and creativity happening in his drumming! But, hey that's just my opinion.
Check out Devon's performance from one of the Guitar Center Drum Off Shows.

Hey Drum Family! Do you ever get the opportunity to really explore the voices and sounds that are possible to achieve with your drums? Of course your drum sound, tuning, approach and expectations depend largely on your gigs and what you need to deliver for them. Check out this cool video of Steve Smith discussing and demonstrating the wide range of sound possibilities of the the snare drum and his thoughts on hand control and technique! How do you approach getting your desired sound from your drums?

Hey Drum Family! GROOVE, GROOVE, GROOVE... Here's a drummer that I have been mildly obsessed with, the incredible Nate Smith... Simple but ALL FEEL. Undeniable... Are you a fan of Nate's and/or have you ever listened to or seen him with The Dave Holland Quintet? What modern jazz drummers, artists or bands do are you listening to these days? Please share yours with us! Here is Nate with KINFOLK Nublu in NYC last month.

Hey Drummers! Do you go through phases in your drumming? Do you find yourself experimenting with lots of different genres of music or do you stick with one style most of the time? I don't play many gigs that require drumming like this but I experiment with playing stuff like this and incorporating more "chops" based drumming into my playing. You never know what the future holds and challenging ourselves to do different things is never a bad thing. After all drumming is drumming and it needs no labels or boundaries, right? Check out the incredible Eric Moore doing his thing the way that he does it!

Hey Drum Family! As a drummer, how well do you truly listen to, interact with and enhance the songs that you are playing?
Do you get into "weaving" your drum parts and performances around the arrangement and what the other musicians are doing in addition to laying down the foundation of the song? Check out this incredible clip of Steve Jordan recording drums for John Mayer's "Waiting On The World To Change". So awesome and inspiring...
How do you approach contructing and rec...ording your parts as a drummer?

Hey Drum Family! Have you ever entered and played in a "drum off" or a drum contest? I personally view drumming as art and not just as a technical ability activity however celebrating drummers coming together as a community to play and enjoy drumming is always cool with me. These guys just keep taking things to new levels, unbelievable talent and lots of work! Check out Guitar Center's 27th Annual Drum-Off 2015 Winner, Tony Taylor Jr.
