About Dutch Delicious

Nourishing community by providing delicious goods in a traditional European atmosphere.

Dutch Delicious Description

Let us tell you a bit About our History and About us!

My name is Siebe Koopman and I took four years of baking college in the Netherlands. In 2004 I moved here for a lovely girl named Joni. We are blessed with three sons and two daughters. We enjoy living in St. Albert and being active members of a Reformed Church.

Dutch Delicious is a fine Dutch Bakery and European Delicatessen.
Before Dutch Delicious came to be, there was Sherbrooke Bakery. Originally the bakery was owned by a Ukrainian baker who started around 1940, on the other side of the traffic circle (the NE side).
In 1961 Peter and Josephine Huppelschoten bought the bakery, and slowly added the Dutch groceries to its shelves, besides all the fine Pastries which Peter was used to doing back in the old country.
After being in the bakery for 25 years they decided the place was too small and moved to its present location at 13232-118th Ave. Including lots of giftware and the best lunches in town it was a very busy store, well known not only in Edmonton, but also in Red Deer and Calgary.
But the time came for them to slow down and they were able to sell the bakery in 2001 to John Vrieselaar and his two sisters Jacqueline and Elizabeth.
John, who did the baking, got up early every morning, and his two sisters stayed late every evening to run the store. After 5 long years they decided to move back to the family and home town Chilliwack, back to British Columbia.

In 2006 My wife and I bought the bakery and brightened it up by changing the layout of the store, restocking the shelves with Dutch imports.
The bread rack and pastry showcase also became fuller as we added more products.
In 2009 Dutch Delicious started ordering more European products, and German and Italian products were added to the assortment.

We have continued to grow since then, some of our highlights are;
2011 – We bought a brand new oven - along with being more efficient it is equipped with a Stone a Deck which creates more authentic European style breads – crispy on the outside and light and dense on the inside.
2011 – 2012

We have introduced all kinds of new products but, one that comes to top of mind is the Rustic rye bread, a real artistic loaf that ferments for a min of 8 hrs. We have also created convenient, authentic Dutch meals – from freezer to microwave, our clients can have a taste of Holland right at their own dinner table.

2012- We also bought a reach in Cheese cooler to make it more convenient for our customers to serve themselves and so we could display our delicious array of cakes we purchased our rotating cake show case.

Nourishing community.

Unfortunate that people are basing their opinion of a baker and his bakery on ONE "incident". If you've ever stepped foot in this bakery, you'd know that Siebe cares about nothing more than the satisfaction of his customers. And this generous business owner donates more time and money to worthy causes than anyone else I know! I am and will always be a loyal customer. It's sickening that a news station would take advantage of such a business for a "news story". Isn't there something more worthwhile to report on? I'd like to see them report when he donates thousands of dollars to nursing homes, kids sports teams, and other causes.

User

They made my wedding cake. They were very accommodating and the Marzipan was a great replacement for fondant. The cake was much better and not overly sweet. Look forward to ordering from here again. Always the best quality.

User

Siebe was the one who made our wedding cake, and it turned out absolutely fabulous and delicious! Much love for this bakery from us!

User

Siebe is one of the best, caring, enthusiastic, generous business men around. Dutch Delicious is a great bakery and we love it that our family all can enjoy and buy such a variety of items. Siebe gives back to the community in so many ways. Siebe you have blessed so many! May God continue to bless you, your staff and your business.

User

Siebe is amazing and just oozes in passion for baking, serving the community and customers!! Everyone is fantastic.

I first fell in love with this store 5 years ago when my fiance (who is also dutch) brought me in and told me to try the Marzipan Square. It was that day that I told him if we ever get married we are having these squares at the wedding and it was not for negotiations . This was before I found out they do cater to making cakes and with a passion I might add. So you can only imagine how excited I am to have that dream come true. Did I mention it's high quality, customizing and super affordable?! Hello a brides dream come true!

They have such a variety of bakery items (dessert and breads), dutch snacks and foods! Yum Yum

Can't say enough about this traditional bakery.

User

Love this store! Wonderful atmosphere. It's warm and caring with a strong sense of community (not limited to just the Dutch community, but the community as a whole). My kids always get excited about going to Dutch Delicious and treat it like a fun field trip. I love that the baking is fresh made. There is always something delicious to eat, but also a lot of neat items in the store to look at and buy. We don't live near Dutch Delicious but always take time to visit!

User

Love Dutch Delicious. Unfortunately dutch 'tradition' has sparked some emotional remarks...I get it....but the bakery is still wonderful with an amazing selection. Will always return for my dutch goodies.

User

Incredible bakery, if I had to explain the owner Siebe in one word it would be Genuine. The products speak for themselves and the team around the shop are always smiling and willing to help. If you haven't stopped by for a taste of Holland in Edmonton, please do yourself a favor.

User

I have shopped here for years and I have never been disappointed. I grew up working in my Opa's bakery so my bar is set really high. I am a sucker for anything with almond paste and the sausage rolls are delicious!

User

I have given a dutch food basket to my customers at Christmas and they all loved it! It's a great bakery with the most caring staff. I think they do a lot for the community too. For example, my kid's soccer jerseys were donated by Dutch Delicious.

User

I absolutely love Dutch Delicious! Siebe works incredibly hard to support his family and his community. He gives, gives, gives. My kids have gone on field trips to DD, and all the parents want to come too. He gives to the kid's soccer teams, he gave away a dutch bike, he has sent customers on a trip to holland, I've even heard that he anonymously drops money in the mailbox of families in need! Please be kind to this generous man. He is father of a young family and works so to hard to provide for his customers. There is no way he had any bad intentions regarding "Blackface". God bless you and your family, Siebe! Merry Christmas!

User

Fantastic bakery! Ordering 50 Chocolate letters was so easy this year, and we even got the "Q"! so exciting.

We love all the food you bring in from the Netherlands, especially the Almond Canoes. And stick to the Dutch traditions! All other ethnicities are free to celebrate their culture, why not the Dutch? Rather than apologize, we should perhaps educate. Enough said..

User

Edmonton is so lucky to have Dutch Delicious! The selection is extensive, quality is excellent, and there are so many treats it's hard to choose. So, just go back multiple times:)

I've just posted this response above because for many of the years that I lived in Edmonton, I'd go to this excellent bakery. So - I rated it as such. Because, one typically responds to the business - to the overall effort. Now I've read some commentary, (which doesn't necessarily happen - we typically don't read too much into any FB page - if any beyond the comment at hand) and I see that there is controversy in Edmonton over a long time Dutch tradition.

It's hurt a number of people. From what I've read, the owner is reflecting on that, apologized for the response, and is rethinking how to go about tradition versus some expressions of pain and anger. This is surely always a challenge when carrying on 'traditions', but I'm hopeful that a new pathway will be found for next year. There are so many intentional antagonisms in our world right now that must be dealt with, and I'm hoping that there is also grace and understanding to respond to Mr. Koopman's reflection.

User

Dutch delicious is a great bakery/deli! We live over an hours drive from Edmonton and when ever we are in the city we drop in to pick up some of their delicious baked products as well as stock up on some other items.

The staff here is always friendly and helpful.

User

Dutch Delicious is one of the best bakeries I have ever been to! For traditional Dutch treats, and some yummy Dutch coffee, Dutch Delicious is a must for our family when we are in the area. Keep up the great work, Siebe!

Dutch Delicious is a great bakery. We have gotten hundreds of delicious baked good for many occasions and they are always top notch!!! Siebe is a kind man and does lots to give back to the community. Looking forward to my next visit 😀

Dutch Delicious is a great bakery run by a nice owner and his team. The atmosphere is always welcoming, by ALL the staff, not just some. The treats, candy, drop, baking, breads, cakes, and pies are always delicious. Yes, I am of Dutch heritage and like the traditions and celebrations, but what happened to being accepting of other cultures and understanding before slandering a name.

I will always go to Dutch Delicious, but it is a dangerous place for the wallet if you love European and Dutch treats because you just want to buy more!

Good job on the store Siebe. Keep up your hard work, it is great to have a light shining in the world.

User

Dutch Delicious has a warm, inviting atmosphere and a variety of awesome products for people missing the food and treats from their homeland. Always great to go in, shop around, and speak with the friendly staff. Best bakery in Edmonton!

Along 118 Ave lays a Dutch Delicious Bakery

that serves mouth-watering pastries for those who are hungry.

Taking a seat on one of the quaint chairs by the front window,

I sip my coffee, while cheerful workers go to and fro.

Along 118 Ave lays a Dutch Delicious Bakery,

where I must fill up a big bag of droppies, naturally.

Cruising the isles of shelves which are stocked with items that are Dutch,

raisin buns, stroopwofel; few items in the basket I clutch.

Along 118 Ave lays a Dutch Delicious Bakery

where a passionate baker works – that is truly noteworthy.

Leaving delightful aromas and out into the weather

I head home to my family so we can break bread together.

Keep up the fantastic work, Dutch Delicious!

Dutch delicious is a great bakery/deli! We live over an hours drive from Edmonton and when ever we are in the city we drop in to pick up some of their delicious baked products as well as stock up on some other items.

The staff here is always friendly and helpful.

Dutch Delicious is one of the best bakeries I have ever been to! For traditional Dutch treats, and some yummy Dutch coffee, Dutch Delicious is a must for our family when we are in the area. Keep up the great work, Siebe!
