Boy and Gurl is a passion duo, formed by Jarred Nicklen (Boy) and Crystal McGrath (Gurl). In 2009 they released their first album together as Boy&Gurl, entitled "Loves Parallel". It was an album that wasn't really meant to happen. Back in 2008 Jarred had the opportunity to hear Crystal perform at a radio event that they were both a part of. She was one of the best singers he had ever heard and knew he wanted to work with her on something together. Jarred decided to approach Crystal to do a charity event with the plan of putting on a concert together as solo artists. They came up with the idea of trying to collaborate on a song and then perform it the night of the show. The process went so well that they decided to write some more, and before they knew it they had written about 12 songs together in a very short time. They decided to hit the recording studio and put down 6 of their favorite songs that they had written together on an album. It wasn't until they were actually in the studio working on "Loves Parallel" that they decided to officially become a band. In the Fall of 2010 they released their second album entitled "Love Crimes". From the album they released two Canadian Top 40 singles. In the Summer of 2013 they returned to radio with their third album entitled "Passion Pop". This EP of 5 songs brought on a life of its own. They felt that there wouldn’t be a title more fitting for the album than the music genre Crystal created for it. "Passion Pop" came to signify every song that was written from their personal experiences of love, humanity and growth from heartbreak. In their four years of making music together they have had the great opportunity and honour to perform with amazing artists over the years such as Kiesza, Ani Difranco, Lights, David Usher, Suzie McNeil, Bedouin Soundclash and Wide Mouth Mason. Powerful vocals, electrifying harmonica, and intense performances define Matt Blais.
Hailing from Calgary, the charismatic Blais expands the rock genre by adding a vintage blues edge that, paired with his honest, accessible songwriting style, has resonated with his Canadian audience. The guitar of Jimmy Bowskill (The Sheep Dogs) weaves in and out with Blais’ harmonica riffs pumping energy into the listener. The single was recorded and produced in Toronto by Brian Moncarz (Our Lady Peace, The Trews). “We wanted to capture the raw excitement of early basement club shows,” says Moncarz.
Matt’s live performances, whether solo or full band, are diverse events balancing high energy, sweaty-rock with emotionally vulnerable ballads. He has been described as Springsteen-esque in stage presence and songwriting ability. Matt Blais has directly supported some of Canada’s biggest acts. Opening for Blue Rodeo, The Trews, and The Strumbellas has shaped Blais into a consummate showman and artistic talent.
Matt’s independently released recordings have charted on campus radio, sold thousands of copies (Canada), and garnered critical acclaim. Notably, Blais has collaborated with Sam Roberts and earned multiple awards such as Calgary’s Singer/Songwriter of the year (2017) and Best Rock Song at the "The Great American Song Contest” (2016).
