Fifty years ago, Albertans began the rural gas co-operative movement to do what no one else would for them - bring natural gas heating to rural areas. It was a movement that caught fire, and across rural Alberta today, farmers, homeowners, and businesses collectively own what has become the world’s largest rural natural gas distribution system.

Working together, these pioneers have brought a standard of living to rural communities that is the equal to anywhere else in Canada. The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. is the united voice of Alberta’s rural gas utilities that have built this movement.

Based in a member owned building in Sherwood Park, Alberta, we currently have 52 Co-ops, 5 Counties, 7 First Nations, and 16 Municipal Gas Systems. These 80 utilities serve over 124, 000 customers and own over 100, 000 kilometres of pipe in the ground to areas of the province that were previously deemed unserviceable. In an average year, our membership consumes over 25, 000, 000 gigajoules of natural gas, and grows by approximately 1, 500 new services.

Our Structure

The Federation is a not-for-profit umbrella organization governed by a board of eight regionally elected directors. This Board sets policies and implements strategy on behalf of the membership. The members have a standard set of bylaws in place to manage the affairs of the Federation.

The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. and its members comprise a unique organization that has, through co-operation, brought an enhanced standard of living to rural Alberta for the past 50 years. The Federation provides representation to industry groups and governments, provide trainings, and ensure that our systems are operated and maintained to the highest standards. The Federation of Alberta Gas Co-ops Ltd. utilities have created jobs, and provided training and economic benefits to rural Alberta.

What started around a farmhouse table is now an example of what can be achieved with co-operation, initiative and hard work.
