About Frenette'S Farm

We are a small hobby farm dedicated to achieving an organic lifestyle and self-sustainability through a blend of traditional and modern homesteading practices. Established 2014.

Frenette'S Farm Description

Frenette Farm is the expected result when pairing a biology graduate and an outdoor educator, both with strong ties to nature and an interest in traditional methods for getting things done. Since first settling on our first acreage in the Rainy River District back in 2014, we have truly come to appreciate the benefits that can be gained from living off the land as much as possible, and will continue to strive for self-sufficiency and healthy living in all that we do.

Working with what little knowledge we had in the beginning, we started our hobby farm with two raised garden beds and the purchase of a single young goat in the spring of 2015. When picking up said goat, we started a trend of putting ourselves through trial by fire, as we then committed to two goats, the second of which was fully matured and in need of milking twice a day, every day. Around this time we also picked up a trio of breeding rabbits.

Our next development took place in February, 2016, when we lined up a flock of laying hens during one of the coldest weeks of the year and had to rush to build a chicken coop in the frigid temperatures. 2016 also heralded a welcome expansion of garden space and our first experience raising chicks.

At the time of writing this in the spring of 2017, we have a flourishing garden, five goats, five adult rabbits plus their babies, a flock of nine mature laying hens, thirty four new chicks hatched in our incubator, and thirty meat chicks. Combined with two dogs, and two pigs that are on the way, that will leave us just shy of one hundred animals on the homestead. Not bad for two university graduates who had only limited experience and a desire to provide some of our own food!

We are now fully committed to continuing a healthy and happy farm lifestyle. We raise all of our animals ethically and as naturally as possible and strive towards organic and sustainable practices.
