”I might struggle with health issues and chronic pain and stigma, but there are people out there struggling with drug addiction, abusive relationships and HIV. It was good to open my mind and not be judgmental. They are still people and they need help.”

This past Friday evening I purchased tickets to see the Front Row Centre Players production of the Tony award winning, “Urinetown.” I have been attending and participating in theatre nonstop since May of 2011; I have experienced many a variation in quality and entertainment in the productions under my own belt. I can honestly say that I have never been privileged to see such an incredible performance as I was treated to by Urinetown.

Lindsay Kurtze, at the helm as the shows director, with the combined talents of her Musical Director Andrea O’Brien, Choreographer Jordanna Fraser-Strangeland and Her Assistant Director Jeff Diodati; have all taken this cast and moulded a truly breath-taking performance. The quality of vocals is leaps and bounds above the high standard that community theatre in Calgary has set in the past few years. None of this could be possible without the machine that is the Stage Manager. As we all know opening nights can be a little choppy; Mikee Ames seemed to make every cue go without a hitch. I personally loved the Lighting choice (throughout the entire show but to clarify) at the beginning of the show. Having the cast start onstage in blacks with work lights on is a very bold and interesting choice and it works incredibly well. The lighting design by JP Thibodeau and Kris Mish is visual brilliance, and it works perfectly with Graeme Humphrey’s amazing set. I could spend this whole review on the technical side of this show that I loved to pieces but I will move on to other aspects to avoid this becoming an essay.

The Cast is simply perfection. Not a single body is wasted. The stage never seems cluttered and every single performer has astounding stage presence and performs without taking the spotlight from eachother. Michael Brown, last seen in last year’s CAT award winning, “That Championship Season”, Is Officer Lockstock whom acts as the narrator of this story. We are taken by him into this post-apocalyptic world of water shortage, and not moments later we meet the incredibly talented Cj Moore, (Last seen in Storybook’s “Captain Louie”) as Little Sally, whom acts as a secondary narrator/foil to Michael Brown. The two have such incredible chemistry on stage and play off of one another in such riveting comedy.

Next up we have the talented Caitlynne Medrek as Hope Cladwell, our female lead. The stage lit up with each moment she was on stage. Known for her voice-acting work on the popular series “Total Drama Island” among her many other credits, and although her character is filed to the brim with pure hearted naivety, she brings such depth to her role and keeps eyes glued to her every moment she has to. An astounding actress indeed. The man she plays off of for most of the show, The protagonist, Bobby Strong, is played by Adam Sanders. From the moment these two come together for, “Follow Your Heart.” You are silently rooting for them, or quite verbally because they get a little touchy in that number and it works. Adam is flawless in her performance. I was in complete belief that he was Bobby Strong. They absorbed me into the story so much that I found myself in tears during a particularly upsetting moment in the second act. Adam stops the show with his incredibly performance of, “Run, Freedom Run.” I would pay again just to see and hear that song.

We also have our Antagonist. The evil, vile, intelligent man who is trying to keep the world together, Stuart Bentley as Caldwell B. Cladwell (I had to spell check that six times.) Stuart delivers a performance worthy of a villain but at the same time, one can sympathize with his decisions. He plays with so much heart that you are taken aback with the wonder if he really is the villain of this story.

I could go on for hours about how astounding this production was. I could have paragraphs about each individual cast member, they are all so wonderfully talented and work together like a machine.

Urinetown is the best show I’ve seen in my years and it is no doubt the best show of the year thusfar. With tickets at $25 you are getting a professional quality production for half the price. In short (tl;dr) Urinetown is incredible. The cast is amazing and the production team has done such an incredible job creating such an artistic masterpiece of a production, If you haven’t checked out Urinetown yet then hurry up and get your tickets. I don’t doubt this show will sell out. Congratulations Urinetown! And Well done. Now I need to go buy some more tickets. 9/10!!

I've hidden backstage, working with the fabulous FRC since January of this year; and I've had an amazing time! When the new season was announced, I knew I'd have to finally overcome my fear and audition for my very first show as a performer, for The Who's Tommy. Luckily for me, FRC was running a workshop to help people just like me--How To Audition for Musical Theatre! The incredibly talented Lindsay Kurtze ran it, and I loved every minute of it. She has the experience and ability in both vocal training and acting to teach even the most green of beginners (like myself), while being able to offer content and guidance that allows more experienced performers to hone their skills. I look forward to taking part on more classes and workshops and cannot recommend them highly enough to others. Take a chance to live a dream! A new class is starting now!

User

I saw Young Frankenstein last night. Seriously, best show ever!!!

User

FRC's audition class with Lindsey was absolutely amazing!

Being so new to community theatre, and having no training or experience, I had no idea what to expect when I walked into an audition. The level of experience and teaching style that Lindsey has made the class both extremely educational and a blast to be apart of. Because of what I learned in this class, I was SO prepared for my audition for The Who's Tommy that I landed my first ever named role as Gypsy. I would recommend this class to anyone, whether you know nothing about auditions or just need a brush up and place to prepare for an upcoming audition.

User

FRC always provides great value and excellent entertainment.

User

Congratulations on an amazing show! You all deserved the standing ovation you got this afternoon.

User

By far the best FRC show ever. Big question: who won the shoe?
