Geriactors Theatre

About Geriactors Theatre

Our mission is to engage seniors and intergenerational groups in which seniors are included in theatre and performance-related activities, and to produce theatre of meaning for our performers and audiences. Adhering to the principles of creative aging, we believe that seniors' engagement in the arts at a level of comparative mastery leads to significant health benefits, an overall sense of well-being, and a marked increase in social and civic engagement. Working intergenerationally, seniors have more creative energy and greater opportunities for expression. Our performance company, GeriActors & Friends, is unique in uniting seniors and younger generations through performer-created play development. Members range in age from early twenties to nineties. Using a playful approach to theatre and emphasizing social interaction, we produce and perform original plays based on our stories and issues of aging. Our plays are authentic, in that they develop from personal stories, even as they may be fictionalized in the writing process, and they carry significant meaning for our performers. We give 8-12 performances a year to seniors and their families, students, health professionals, caregivers, and the general public. Our audiences seeing actors of their own age performing material that reflects their own experiences identify with and readily discuss the themes and arguments of our plays. Furthermore, by reaching intergenerational audiences and those from various sectors, we challenge stereotypes of aging and bring people together to share in meaningful discussions about lived experiences. Our Outreach Programs seek to involve participants in a wide range of theatrical activities. Programs include: workshops in storytelling, improv and acting; facilitator training; and FEST (the Festival of Edmonton Seniors Theatre).
