Alex Janvier’s painting Lubicon (1988) is the result of the painter’s outrage over the treatment of the Lubicon Lake Cree Nation by the federal government and resource-extraction corporations. At the time it was made, the Lubicon were seeking settlement of an outstanding 48-year claim with the Canadian government. To draw attention to their plight, the Lubcion made a public call to museums to refuse to lend their objects to exhibition The Spirit Sings here at Glenbow. The sho...w was the major cultural component of the 1988 Winter Olympics and was sponsored by a company that was an offender on Lubicon land. When Janvier heard that houses at Lubicon Lake were being bulldozed, he changed the background of the painting to bright red to reflect his rage over the inequity and hypocrisy of the situation.
Today this powerful work is at Glenbow as part of the exhibition Alex Janvier: Modern Indigenous Master

This carved whalebone is huge. *Crayon to demonstrate scale
This Whalebone was carved in the late 1970s - early 1980s by Inuit artist Abraham Anghik Ruben.
... Did you know that whalebone is a sculpting material that needs to be aged for 50 to 100 years before it is ready to be carved; whalebone that is insufficiently aged or dried can smell and shrink after carving.
Manager of Collections, Daryl Betenia says "The large whalebone sculpture is fascinating because of the relatively rarity of Inuit pieces this large and from this material, and because of the ambiguity inherent in the piece. There are several separate images included in the sculpture and we don’t fully understand their meaning or significance, although they appear as though they are likely portraying spiritual and psychological angst, perhaps a reflection of living in a harsh and unforgiving environment."
Check it out for yourself as it is currently on display at Glenbow in the Recent Acquisitions exhibition which will be on until Dec 9, 2018.

We lived in Calgary for almost 10 years, and Glenbow was our monthly visit. My only regret is now is too far away, (We live in Spain)

We have a family annual membership and go regularly. My daughter loves the crafts room. It's always the first stop. Then, we usually walk around for an hour or so. Unfortunately, that's as long as we get with an infant and toddler, but we keep coming back and our daughter loves it.

I always love spending most of my time in the current exhibit. They are always interesting.

User

This place is amazing!! So much fun and so interesting. If you haven’t been...you must go!!!! Totally worth it!!!

User

This is such an amazing museum. The exhibits were fabulous. The museum is really big, so I couldn't see all the exhibitions, you need like 3 hours to see everything. 100% recommended!

User

The Museum is a pleasant place and the best aspect is exhibitions. Frida Khalo is the most interesting event.

User

My husband and I went expecting an art museum, it’s so much more! We spent several hours learning about the history of Alberta from several points of view. Great incorporation of video learning into the exhibits. Highly recommend!

User

It's really a wonderful day trip, with the whole family!

User

It's been a while since I visited the Glenbow Museum, and went to the open house on March 19th with my mom. The museum has changed since the last time I been over 20 years ago before I left for Ontario. The exhibitions, are very interactive, educational, interwoven and great for the family to learn of a by gone era. Great to see the pioneers of Alberta, and Canada. At the Stu Hart photo with his championship belt, a few of us chatted about what he brought as an entrepreneur with stampede wrestling. The Glenbow Museum is great for families and friends to interact and reminisce about our rich past.

User

It has a good variety of exhibits and looks really informative for school kids

User

I just love this place, a museum that make my kids feel welcome is a great great place to learn!

User

Glenbow Museum is a wonderful place! If you're thirsty for knowledge and general information about a wide range of topics, this place doesn't disappoint! The staff are extremely knowledgeable and the displays are first rate! Make a point to check this place off your TO DO list!

Family Day 2017...My 7 yr old was reluctant to go since she had already been with her classmates; however, when she found out that she could be the guide for her family, she was over the moon. Both daughters, 7 & 5, loved touring the museum, especially when they got to do a scavenger hunt that lead them to earn prizes for their correct answers. We also really enjoyed doing the crafts in The Discovery Room together...we did Plasticine art & then colored some vintage film images. We went around 11 am, did one craft, one floor and then took a break for lunch (across the street). After lunch, we did another craft and 1 more floor (3 pm). The end result...everyone had a great day at Glenbow.

As visitor to this world class venue. It would be a great honour to share my entire collection of pareidolia image photographs for this insightful very educational institution.

User

It has been far too many years since I have gone to the Glenbow. I have a friend from Ontario spending the summer here and decided to take her as she has never been. We spent a lovely Sunday afternoon strolling through the museum looking at the various displays. Definately need to make more of an effort to come back more often as it's a great way to spend a relaxing day as a tourist in my own city.

User

I enjoyed most of the museum, picture/ photography art is not my thing, loved the mineral and gemstone collection, would love to have a few of them in my display showcase, overall you need at least 4-5 hrs to see everything, but need more to read all of the exhibits

User

Geology and mineralogy exhibit was cool! Reminded me of all the cool stuff I learned in post secondary.

User

Amazing displays, but not enough space for all the viewers. Some displays were so cramped you didn’t have enough time or space to read the placards without feeling pressed for time, or space. Overall, the displays were incredible. We saw ancient Asian artifacts, the black gold tapestries which were by far my favourite, and many others which were amazing to see. I look forward to the next free Thursday to view some more magnificent art.

User

I purchased a membership to help support the museum. This was my first visit in quiet some time. I visited most of the exhibits but didn't find them to be too exciting. Not sure if it's the lighting or the frames but I felt heavy and depressed while looking at some of the art. A painting of people living in the cold mud winter in a gilded frame??? I think they need a refresh e.g. In the Crystals area some of the labels needed to be updated. Would have liked to have seen more info on John Ware and his contribution to Alberta. BTW, I had read the book and it was facinating. Read a polite letter from the Klan to Mr. Peters. Would have like more history about the First Nations and the atrocities they endured i.e. Residential schools as wells as samples of success. I did enjoy seeing the First Nations artifacts. Gift store I would like to see good quality Alberta artisans represented in natural fabrics. Too many polyester scarves. Would have loved to be able to purchase one of a kind wool mitts and scarves, blankets; post cards/greeting cards show casing John Ware. Overall it was nice afternoon spent wondering around in a quiet space with my friend.

User

I only had 5 hours and it would take that long again and more to see everything. Question: Didn't ranching come to Alberta before oil? I didn't see many exhibits.
