Grow Forward Grovenor

A transition initiative in the city of Edmonton, Alberta, Canada

Grow Forward Grovenor is a transition initiative at the community level. The Transition Town movement started in Ireland, and grew rapidly throughout the United Kingdom. It is a grassroots movement that has spread all over the globe in just a few years. Right here in River City, a group of enthusiastic people started the Transition Edmonton initiative, including an energetic leader from our own community.

The idea behind transition towns is to adapt our society to meet the major upcoming challenges of climate change and peak oil. The plan involves using far less energy, in response to increasing energy prices and rising CO2 levels in the atmosphere. More generally, it is a plan for developing sustainable and resilient communities – using less, and having backup systems to withstand climate change and economic hardship. Since every local community is distinct, and faces different circumstances, the transition town philosophy empowers citizens to find the innovative solutions that work best for them.
