Halstead Sofa And Mattress Makers

When staying at Buffalo Mountain Lodge in Banff, we loved the bed and after inquiring we were told that Halstead makes them. After contacting Halstead, we purchaed a custom queen size mattress, made to the specifications of BML.

It's made the world of difference to our sleeping. I now wake up in the morning without back pain, and can fall asleep easily on this super comfortable bed. Thank you Halstead!

I would not buy a bed or frame from any where else. Currently looking at buying a couch from these guys. Service and quality is unmatched from anywhere I have shopped in Calgary!

I discovered Halstead while researching what type of mattress I should purchase on a forum. When a commenter mentioned that I could get a custom mattress for around the same price, or slightly higher than a big name brand, depending on the level of mattress, my interest was piqued. When I found out that big brand mattresses are now built with planned obsolescence and that a Halstead custom mattress lasts 3 times longer (25 years+ for the mattress, about 8 years for the topper), I knew it was a no brainer to spend a little bit more for a superior quality mattress. Throughout the process, Natalie and Martin set up several mattress configurations for my fiancé and I. First, we laid on a pad that mapped where the most pressure was between our bodies and the mattress. Then, Martin and Natalie let us try different modules (there are 6 modules per mattress, head, torso, legs for 2 people – really offers ultimate customization between soft, medium, and firm), cores, and toppers. We spent quite a few hours in total trying to nail down our perfect mattress and Martin and Natalie gave us as much time as we needed.

Our custom Halstead Mattress has been wonderful to sleep on. It feels like a bed at the Four Seasons, and is easy to rotate as you don’t have to flip the entire mattress (just unzip the topper and rotate the individual modules). Also important to us was the fact that we could support a local Canadian business as opposed to giving our money to the big brands which build products that deteriorate after 2 years so you want to buy new mattresses more often.

If you want to buy a superior mattress that is built to last, then I highly recommend Halstead. Thank you Martin and Natalie for a great mattress buying experience. Looking forward to seeing you in 25 years, after we’ve gotten married, had kids, sent them to college, and need a new mattress.

We bought 3 items from Halstead. I would not purchase anything from them again. Here is why.

Natural Latex Mattress & bed: in Fall 2013 we bought a custom build bed and natural latex mattress. The bed is fantastic and we miss it when we travel. I wish we didn't buy anything else and then I would have given them a higher rating!

Update: June 7, 2016
In February Martin called me and apologized for the below described situation. He said they were going to make it right. That was over 4 months ago and I still have not heard anything back! I called today and left a message on their voice mail, sent an email and sent a message on Facebook. I wonder if they will respond. I wonder if there is a bed being built for us or if we have to continue to use the "high bed" that is 4 inches too tall.

Custom designed Sofa & Bed: below is the email that I sent to Halstead and Martin, and we did NOT receive a response from them.

Quote from my email to Halstead:
"In Oct 2014 we ordered a custom sofa and bed from you at the shop. Please see attached email with the specs. We signed these specs in person at the store because emails and phone messages do not result in a call back.

There were problems:
1. Dec 14th we paid the outstanding balance as we were told they were built and needed to pay so we could arrange delivery as the sofa and bed were "complete". We said we needed the delivery before we leave on vacation for a month (January 10th departure) and preferred before the holiday.
2. After a lot of un-returned phone calls we found out that the bed and sofa were NOT complete and would not be done in December.
3. We finally received delivery Jan 3rd but there were problems with both the bed and the sofa.
4. The sofa cushions were delivered Jan 7th.
There was no time to review what was delivered before we left town Jan 10th.

Now that we are back here is a summary of the problems:

Sofa problems:
Robert had to get out tools to cut the bolt to the back of the sofa so it could get down the stairs. The design of the sofa as discussed was supposed to have a removable back. There was no repair for this bolt that was cut.
The cushions were not delivered with the sofa due to manufacturing problem

Bed problems:
The "drawers" are platforms with a high front. The sides are missing.
There is no "pull" so it is difficult to open the "drawers" when they are closed.
The bed was crazy tall but we did not check the specs as we were preparing for our trip.
The bed does not match the specification that we signed.
bed height is 4 inches taller than the spec (base spec 20", actual is 24")
drawers are 15 inches narrower than the spec (72"W spec, actual is 57")
drawers are not built according to the spec (72"W x 26"D x 16" H)

We are not happy with the bed due to it not matching our specification.
