About Handwovens By Katherine Rankin

Handwoven, one-of-a-kind items for you and your home.

Handwovens By Katherine Rankin Description

In my home studio, I work (and play) at weaving, dyeing and spinning. I love to explore the interplay of colours, and the effects of a variety of texture as I create one-of-a-kind wearables, and household linens. I studied in the Master Weaver program and continue to learn on a daily basis. I taught weaving in Edmonton and currently teach in Medicine Hat.

My studio is home to a 1947 Leclerc Fanny loom. I’ll do the math for you – she’s 70 years-old! And next to her is a Woolhouse 8 shaft Kirsten. Both of my girls are made in Canada and I try to weave with Canadian-sourced fibre as much as possible.

I prefer to weave with finer yarns made of tencel, bamboo, silk, cotton and linen. To switch it up, I’ll adventure into textured, heavier yarns in a mixed warp. My weaving often incorporates hand-spun and hand-dyed materials.

Another of my favorite art forms is macro photography. This is probably explains the fascination I had with color and texture when I began weaving in 2007.
