Heritage Chickens Description

The Adopt a Heritage Chicken program is a conservation effort to preserve heritage chicken breeds for future generations. Modern chicken genetics are used throughout the world for they high efficiency of either egg or chicken meat productions and their genetics are very different from the heritage chicken breeds of the past. The specific poultry genetics that will serve the needs of the future are unknown so its important to preserve these breeds. Conservation requires maintaining live populations which is expensive. Through public support of the Adopt a Hen program, the Poultry Research Centre can successfully save their heritage breeds for future generations.
