When I was little, I thought I was a dog. Whether this was a manifestation of some deep desire to fill the empty role of ‘dog’ in our home or simply the result of a healthy childhood imagination, I do not know.

What I do recall is my commitment to being a dog was fierce. I drank out of a bowl, traveled around the house on all fours (stairs presented a challenge, but not an insurmountable one), barked and panted. It presented a challenge to my family to identify whether I was currently 5 year old Janna or Hubert.

My big brother Marc developed a solution. It involved a wooden sign that said “Hubert” on one side and “Janna” on the other and a pair of ears made out of a black elastic band, two gold safety pins and green felt. My life as a dog became easier thanks to these genius additions and I continued on as Hubert for a few years. The exact number of years is debatable and my sisters’ responses suggest that I was much older than I would care to admit.

Hubert’s Canine Specialty Products allows me to re-engage with that childhood passion and imagination. The green of the product names mimics the green of my felt ears and a few hand selected products come complete with a mini set of ears. It’s a tribute to a time when life was simple, imagination ran wild and happiness was being a dog….
