Huestis Demonstration Forest Description

Forests and forestry are an essential part of the history, environment, natural beauty and diverse economy of the Whitecourt and Woodlands County region. And one of the best ways to learn about forest ecosystems and sustainable forest management practices in our region is to visit the E. S. Huestis Demonstration Forest.

Located just minutes from Whitecourt (12 km northwest on Hwy 32), the Huestis Demonstration Forest is a 10-square km outdoor education and recreation area that showcases how Alberta's working forests are managed to sustain multiple values, including air and water quality, plant and animal habitat, recreation, traditional uses and renewable resource development.

Huestis is a destination for all who are interested in their environment and the forestry practices that have helped shape our province. A 7-km road-loop travels through the forest and allows visitors to learn something new at each of the 20 interpretive stops. You can walk, run, bike or drive the loop, or hike a short trail loop. Throughout the site, you will observe the working forest at all stages, from undisturbed, to freshly cut and replanted, to fully reforested.

Members of the public are welcome to conduct their own self-guided tours, and regional school groups are frequent visitors. Teachers wishing to book a free field trip can make a request at http://www. insideeducation. ca /classroom-field-programs / .

Huestis site and program development are guided by the Huestis Demonstration Forest Partnership, a cooperative effort of industry, government, educators and recreationists. Members include local forest companies Millar Western, Alberta Newsprint Company and West Fraser-Blue Ridge; the Government of Alberta; Woodlands County; Inside Education; Northern Gateway Public Schools; the University of Alberta and NAIT forestry programs; and the Whitecourt Trailblazers snowmobile club.
