James Doran has been dedicated to the practice of criminal law since the beginning of his law career. As a law student, James was an active participant in Student Legal Assistance, Pro Bono Students Canada, and the Innocence Project. During the summer months, James worked with Alberta Justice, learning the ins and outs of criminal prosecution, and volunteered his time at a criminal defence office in Ontario.

After graduation, James secured an articling position with Foster Iovinelli Beyak Kothari, practicing with Tim Foster, Q. C. and Katherin Beyak. During his articles, James gained valuable experience in criminal defence litigation, assisting with hundreds of files and matters ranging from simple assaults, to impaired driving offences, to serious sexual assault offences.

As an independent practitioner, James is focused on providing his clients with a determined, comprehensive defence to any charges they may be facing. Having experience on both sides of the criminal courtroom, James is uniquely able to assess his clients' legal matters and create an effective strategy to meet his clients' goals. As an Associate of Foster Iovinelli Beyak Kothari, James is in an ideal position to discuss issues and defences with his accomplished colleagues and consult with senior counsel. Regardless of the offence, James leaves no stone unturned in finding the best solution for his clients' needs.

James originally hails from Toronto, Ontario, and received a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Toronto with a concentration in English literature and history. James graduated from the University of Calgary, Faculty of Law in April of 2016, and completed his articles with Katherin Beyak. In his spare time, James can be found roaming Kananaskis country. James is an avid hiker, climber, and runner, and enjoys all things related to the great outdoors.
